---- — LONGMEADOW — The North Shore’s two remaining golfers with local ties, Jason Steele and Nick McLaughlin, were each knocked out of contention at the 105th annual Massachusetts Amateur golf championships yesterday at Longmeadow Country Club.
On Day 4 of the five-day tournament, both golfers were bounced from match play in the round of 16.
Steele, who plays out of Ferncroft Golf Club, fell to Daniel Falucci of Cyprian Keyes GC, 2 and 1. Steele, who never led, birdied both the 7th (par-3) and 11th (par-4) holes to tie the match up both times, but bogeyed both 12 and 15 while Falucci played par golf from the 10th hole on to prevail.
McLaughlin, a member at Far Corner Golf Course, lost his match to Old Sandwich’s Doug Clapp, 4 and 3. The ex-St. John’s Prep star and current Virginia Cavalier was down two after just five holes, but rallied to tie it up after seven, including a birdie at the par-3 185-yard seventh hole. But Clapp picked up a stroke on each of the next three holes to eventually pull away for the win.
