St. John’s Prep 2, Framingham 1: Junior Athony Vigliotta found Nate Schmidt on a cross with just under a minute to play in a Division 1 North first round contest. Schmidt headed the winning goal to advance the Eagles to the quarterfinals against tournament rival Acton-Boxboro tomorrow. The Prep was down 1-0 at halftime, but the second half proved to be the difference maker.
“We played much better in the second half and wore them down,” said coach Dave Crowell. “It was a tight game in the first half, but it really showed our resilience.”
Lev Kazelyan tied the game on an assist from Brooks Clark. Along with his assist, Vigliotta played strong on the forward line for the Eagles (15-1-2) as did Greg French in the midfield.
Ipswich 6, Lowell Catholic 1: In Div. 3 North action, Ryan Law (two assists) and Chris DiNocco each had a pair of goals for the 14th seeded Tigers (9-6-4). Zach Eliopolous finished with a goal and an assist, Neil Coleman recorded a goal and Sam Benford added two assists. Ipswich travels to Watertown for a quarterfinals matchup tomorrow night.
Winchester 2, Beverly 1: Sean Curtin scored 30 minutes into the first half to tie the game at one apiece, but Winchester got the game winner in OT. Keeper Justin Carnavale made some fabulous saves for the Panthers (11-5-3), which played in their first postseason game since 2005. Freshman Sean Hanlon and senior captain Cam Rogers played well in the midfield, while Conor Leahy chipped in with the assist.
St. Mary’s 5, AP 0: Senior captain Alexander Alleyne (Swampscott) had two goals and two assists, while Salem native Helio Neto recorded his ninth shutout of the season for St. Mary’s (13-3-0) which advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 3 North tournament. Kevin Esper had one goal and two assists while Josh Bertrand and Mike Russo had a goal each.
