St. John’s Prep golf coach Larry O’Neill scheduled knee surgery for a week after the golf season was supposed to end. Hurricane Sandy altered the golf plans, however, meaning O’Neill was unable to be at Norton Country Club yesterday as his Eagles chased their second Division 1 state championship in three years.
St. John’s barely missed grabbing the title, placing third behind St. John’s of Shrewsbury and B.C. High.
St. John’s of Shrewsbury and B.C. High each had 315 team scores, with Shrewsbury winning the tiebreaker when the score of its fifth player was counted. The Prep came in three shots back at 318.
The Eagles were led by the fabulous freshman duo of Steven Dilisio and James Turner. Dilisio led the way with a 76, and Turner added a 78.
Jeff O’Connor shot an 80 and Josh Wingardner pitched in an 84 to account for the Prep score.
Dilisio finished third as an individual, and Peabody’s Athan Goulos, who qualified as an individual, shot an 80 (39-41).
