Another tournament, another championship for Meghan Duggan.
The women's ice hockey international superstar from Danvers helped the United States Women's National Team win its third straight International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Women's Championship yesterday as the Americans knocked off Canada in overtime, 3-2, in Zurich, Switzerland.
The 5-foot-9 Duggan, a winger from the University of Wisconsin, finished the tournament with four goals and three assists. That enabled her to finish fifth in tournament scoring.
The reigning Patty Kazmaier Award winner as the best college hockey player in the country, Duggan was one of the driving forces as the top-seeded Americans finished the tournament at 5-0-0 and outscored their opponents 35-5.
This was her fourth time at the Women's World Championships and third time winning gold, including 2008 and 2009 (as well as a silver in 2007). Duggan had four goals and an assist in the 2008 World Championships and a pair of goals at the same event the following year.
Duggan finished her collegiate career at Wisconsin last month by winning her third NCAA women's ice hockey championship in her four years. The WCHA Player of the Year and Frozen Four co-MVP ended her brilliant career with a school record 238 points (108 goals, 130 assists) and led the nation in scoring with 87 points (39 goals, 48 assists) this past season.
