Jeff Waldron led the North Shore Navigators to the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship this summer in his first season as skipper of the local nine, and as a result was named NECBL Manager of the Year earlier this week.
A Lynn native and former Lynn Classical superstar who captained the 1999 Boston College baseball team, Waldron was the steady hand needed to guide the Navigators to their best season since moving to the North Shore. The NECBL's champions were ranked No. 16 nationally among summer college teams at the end of the year.
Lynnfield's Jason Banos was the only other Navigator to be recognized in the postseason awards, as the outfielder from Columbia University was named to the All-NECBL first team. The MVP of the league's all-star game, Banos hit .348 during the regular season and finished third in the chase for the NECBL batting title.
A strong defensive outfielder who didn't make an error during the regular season, Banos knocked in 17 runs, scored 21 and had an on-base percentage of .417 to go with eight stolen bases. He followed that up by collecting 10 hits and four RBI in the playoffs.
The Navs went 25-17 in the regular season, finishing second in the East Division. North Shore got the last laugh against first-place Newport, though, by toppling the Gulls in the a three-game playoff series. The Navs then beat Danbury in a best-of-three set to claim their first Fay Vincent Sr. Cup. North Shore wound up undefeated at Fraser Field in the playoffs.
Lowell's Effrey Valdez, who set a league record for RBI in a season, was named NECBL MVP.
