Smerczynski will not return to St. John's Prep this fall

Senior Sean Smerczynski has withdrawn from St. John’s Prep which is a big blow to the Eagles’ football team which is looking to defend their Super Bowl championship. Star running back Johnathan Thomas will lead the offense while Smerczynski, who has been a starter since his freshman year, was expected to anchor the defense at inside linebacker.

“Sean withdrew for personal reasons,” said his father Michael. “He will finish his studies at a private prep school. We have been in communication with several schools and will make that decision very soon.”

Smerczynski, who is from Topsfield, has verbally committed to play for Holy Cross.
