---- — The 2013 Golden Stick Junior Open Wiffle Tournament will be held Saturday at Patton Park in Hamilton beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Teams from all over the North Shore will compete in pool play, leading to a single-elimination format that will culminate in the Players’ Cup final at 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to stay to support the North Shore Final Four (teams) that will vie for the championship.
Any new teams that would like to enter are welcome to participate.
“We had a very successful season and crowned our champions last week,” said Golden Stick league president Lou Levesque. “Everybody played each of the top four teams, and we ended with a gold, silver and bronze champion.”
The 8-9 year-old Forest team won the bronze while the 11-12 year-old Marooners took silver, and the 13-14-year-old Big Navy Ched squad was awarded the gold medal.
“We’ll have all 12 teams from the league competing (Saturday) at the newly renovated Patton Park,” said Levesque. “We hope to have 18-to-20 and maybe even 30 teams there. It’s going to be a fun day for everyone.”
This summer the turnout in Salem, Hamilton-Wenham and Beverly was small enough to allow those teams to merge into a Tuesday night league in Danvers.
“We want to grow in the other three towns next year,” said Levesque. “We’ve been in Danvers for several years, but because this was our first time in the other towns I don’t think people knew a lot about us. We hope to expand and are thinking about making some changes. We might get our league going before Little League season begins. The Danvers Recreation Department asked us to run a fall program, and I’m going to meet with them soon to discus details.”
Anybody interested in putting a team together for the tournament (ages 7-14) at Patton Park can register at goldenstickwiffle.com and click on Youth Leagues, or call Levesque at 978-473-1567. Cost is $25 per player including the tournament, prizes, a GSWL Junior shirt, game socks and embroidered hat. All returning teams are free to play this Saturday since the tournament was included in their fee to play in the league.
