Wednesday's area roundup: Beverly looks sharp in opener


Beverly 4, Bishop Fenwick 0: Ryan Santo, Savio Polini, Elesio Kanani and Ralph Ferrigno each scored goals as the Panthers looked sharp in their opener. Peter Coletti had the assist on Ferrigno’s goal, which Beverly coach Kevin Leahy called “one of the prettiest I’ve seen in all my years of coaching.”

Christian Goodwin and Sean Hanlon each played well defensively while Graham Doherty stood out at center midfield.

“I think we struggled overall, including coaching,” Fenwick (0-1) coach Nick Padovani said. “We didn’t do anything well, but we gotta stay positive and we gotta grow.”

St. Mary’s 4, Lynn English 1: Cristian Chavez registered the hat trick as the Spartans started with a win in the opening round of the Lynn City Tournament. Josh Bertrand added one goal and two assists and Joshua Felix also had an assist. St. Mary’s will play Lynn Classical in the finals on Saturday.


Beverly 4, Swampscott 1: The Panthers (1-0) opened the season with a convincing win as Molly Pitman scored a pair of goals and Shannon Silvestre and Mary Cate Flaherty had one each. Kate Silvestre and Nicole Woods helped Beverly control possession and played well in the middle.Swampscott (0-1) had a solid team effort and the Big Blue’s goal came from Tori Thistle assisted by Aimee Aylward.

Bishop Fenwick 7, Dracut 0: Erinn Johnson had a smashing debut for the 2013 season with four goals and one assit in Fenwick’s opening day win. Amanda Pollard added two goals and on assist, Brianna Trodella scored and the Crusaders midfield was very strong with Kathleen Moran, Caroline Crawford and Natalie Moore. Jackie Hart added two assists for the winners.

Peabody 7, Salem 0: Jenna Ferullo scored three times and dished out two assists from the right side as the Tanners (1-0) were firing on all cylinders. Noelle Koch was strong on defense and goalie Ally Daly made two spectacular stops and earned the shutout. Sophomores Sarah Blanchette and Haley McCarron each scored their first varsity goals.
