Wednesday's area roundup: Beverly looks sharp in opener


Manchester Essex 1, Lynnfield 1: Paige Zaval scored to make sure the Hornets (0-0-1) took a point out of their opener. Captains Taylor Meek and Sarah Beckman were quite strong for Manchester.

Ipswich 3, Amesbury 1: Junior Nikki Pignone scored all three goals, including two in the first eight minutes, to lead the Tigers (1-0) to a Cape Ann League win. Ipswich rode good stick work and passing to the victory.

Triton 1, Hamilton-Wenham 0: Sophomore goalie Maddie Werner made eight saves in his first varsity start for the Generals (0-1).

Andover 5, Danvers 0: The Falcons played well early before Andover took charge. Lauren Johnson and Amanda Ward played well for Danvers (0-1).


Peabody 3, Lynn English 0: Peabody handled the Bulldogs 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 to open the season. Olivia Summit had seven kills, Hailey Hanrahan contributed four kills, and Jillian DeFelice added four aces.

Masco 3, Hamilton-Wenham 1: The Chieftains dropped the first game, 25-22, but came back to win the final three, 25-16, 25-13, 25-8. Haley Greenslade (3 service points, 2 assists, 9 digs, 5 kills, 2 blocks) and Natasha Murray (2 service points, 4 digs, 10 kills, 2 blocks) had outstanding all-around games for Masco (1-0).

Tori Vivenzio, a freshman setter, played well for the Generals and Maddie O’Connor served well.

Revere 3, Salem 1: Codey Homan had six kills and four aces and Hannah Mullarkey added great defense and 10 aces, but it wasn’t enough as the Witches fell 25-21. 25-21, 18-25, 25-14.


Salem 37, Lynn English 35: A.J. Darmody (6 1/2- 2 1/2), Josh Powers (6 1/2- 2 1/2), Cam Twomey (6-3), Wes Schaejbe (6-4) all had wins for the Witches (1-1).

Masconomet 123, Georgetown 96: Paul O’Kelly (24 points), Paul Arsenault (23 points) and Tommy Valeriani (22 points) were the top three scorers for the Chieftains in their opening match.

Lynnfield 148, Ipswich 129: Seniors Quinn O’Connor (26 points), Austin Rubino (25) and Ryan Mulkarin (24) finished strong for the Tigers despite the loss.

Beverly 50 1/2, Lynn Classical 21 1/2: The Panthers improve to 2-0 behind wins from senior Craig Hall (6-3) and sophomore Garrett Desmond (8 1/2-1/2).

Peabody 49 1/2, Revere 22 1/2: The Tanners got wins at all eight spots to get their first win. Nolan Franey, Matt Correale, Steve Ferrante, Ted Izzo, Steve Goggin, Tom Southern, Zach Bille, and Bobby Sacramone each had wins for Peabody (1-1).
