Thursday's area roundup: Sophomores lead Danvers golfers to first victory


Danvers 37, Winthrop 35: The Falcons earned their first win of the fall with sophomores Mike Plansky, Wes Milbury and Christian McKenna all picking up victories. Senior Matt Alexander tied his match for Danvers (1-3) as well.

Salem 40 1/2, Lynn Classical 31 1/2: Kyle Doherty, Salem’s No. 1 player, won his match 5 and 4 to help his team improve to 2-2. Madison Ballou won her match at No. 2, 5 1/2 to 3 1/2, as did No. 5 Cam Twomey (6-3), No. 6 A.J. Darmody (7-2) and the Nos. 7 and 8 players, Wes Schaejbe and Josh Powers, by identical 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 scores.

Beverly 41, Peabody 31: The Panthers improve to 5-0 behind wins from Ted Leathersich (7 1/2- 1 1/2), Bryce Mitchell (5 1/2- 3 1/2) and Shamus Desmond (5 1/2- 3 1/2). Matt Correale (5-4) and Ted Izzo (6 1/2- 2 1/2) had the wins for the Tanners (2-2).

Masconomet 165, Manchester Essex 159: In his first match back since suffering a broken finger, George May shot one over par (34 points) for the Chieftains (2-1). Christian Cardarelli birdied three of the last four holes to finish with 30 points, while Mike Manni and Dom Buonopane had 28 points.

Ipswich 134, Pentucket 101: Austin Rubino scored 30 points to power the Tigers (3-1) to another win. Kyle Mulkerin (26 points) and Eric Gongas (24 points) also had a strong showing on the links at Haverhill Country Club.

Hamilton-Wenham 145, Georgetown 75: Harrison O’Brien was medalist for the Generals (2-1) with 27 points, followed by Kevin Heppner with 26. Mike Gillis and Dillon Durand each finished with 24 points to round out a fine afternoon for H-W.

Marblehead 177, St. Mary’s Lynn 164: In quota play, the Magicians rose up and played well at Gannon Country Club to improve to 4-1.

St. John’s Prep 226, Malden Catholic 257: Sophomores Steven DiLisio and James Turner both shot 1-over par 36s at Mount Hood to power the Eagles (3-1). Jeff O’Connor (37) and Colin Natale (38) also helped guide the Prep to victory.


Masconomet 3, North Reading 1: Junior middle hitter Maddie Burliss had an excellent all-around match with five service points, five digs, five kills, three blocks, and one assist as the Chieftains won 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19. Junior setter Katherine McManus also played well, contributing 23 assists for Masco (2-1).
