Weekend area roundup: Danvers hockey wins 10th straight; Prep qualifies for state tourney

BOYS HOCKEY

Danvers 4, Winthrop 2: Playing what head coach Kevin Brown called "his best game of the season by far," senior goaltender Seth Kamens made 19 saves as visiting Danvers (12-2) won its 10th straight game and swept its season series with Winthrop. Captain Nick Strangie had a goal and an assist; his cousin Joe Strangie (also a captain) added a goal; and Rob Buchanan and A.J. Couto also found the back of the net.

St. John's Prep 6, Austin Prep 0: The Eagles (10-5) qualified for the state tournament as senior captain David Letarte (12 saves) recorded his fifth shutout of the season. Fellow captains Brian Pinho and Sam Kurker added two goals each, while Nick Bragole and Andrew Brandano also scored and defenseman John Ryan notched two assists.

Swampscott 5, Salem 2: Corey Carmody had two goals while linemates Nunzio Morretti (goal, assist) and Robert Serino (3 assists) also had big games as the Big Blue improved to 7-7-1. Chris Dandreo contributed a goal and an assist to the cause while Matt Videtta also scored while Patrick Sheehan had 14 saves.

Salem (1-14) got a goal and an assist from Spencer Bergholtz, as well as a tally from Jake Stahlman.

Agawam 2, Marblehead 1: A goal from Trevor Jones and 24 saves from Mike Harper weren't enough as the Headers (5-8-1) fell at the Mullins Center in Amherst.

Masconomet 2, Amesbury 1: Junior Dylan Tinkham's second goal of the season was the game-winner on this night as the Chieftains (6-8) recorded a much-needed win. Freshman Mike Castro added his first varsity goal (on an assist from sophomore Ryan Duval for his first varsity point), while Matt Cardillo had 17 saves.

St. Mary's Lynn 6, Bishop Fenwick 0: Pat O'Leary had 22 saves in a losing effort for Fenwick (2-12-1).

SWIMMING

Generals take 2nd at cal meet: Andrew Klobucher and Alessandro Eramo won two events each as Hamilton-Wenham finished second overall Cape Ann League Co-ed Championship Meet yesterday at Salem State with 407 points, trailing only North Andover (514). Klobucher won the 200 freestyle (1:50.45) and 100 freestyle (50.29), while Eramo was victorious in both the 100 butterfly (57.84) and 100 backstroke (1:00.71). In addition, Eric Baumeister had a pair of third place finishes in the 100 fly (59.71) and 500 free (5:18.38) for the Generals, which took third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.74).

Cody Arrington won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:14.28 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.69 to lead Masconomet, which finished fifth with 244 points. Jacob Gillespie added a second-place finish in the 100 back (1:05.39) for the Chieftains. Also, Ipswich finished with 82 points.

PINGREE 62, dEXTER 32: Seniors Molly McSweeney and Emma Gaquin each won two events as the Highlanders (7-3) won their fourth straight meet. McSweeney was triumphant in the 200 IM (2:20.82) and 100 fly (1:04.43) while Gaquin captured the 500 free (5:28.54) and 100 back (1:10.07). Other winners included fellow senior Simi Harrison (50 free, 26.57), sophomore Kyle Skelton (100 breast) and the 200 medley (2:03.16) and 400 free (4:01.44) relay teams.

GIRLS TRACK

Fenwick shatters record: Hannah Smith, Taylor Cunningham, Arianna Maida and Faye Haley ran a 1:10.83 in the 4x800 relay at the Last Chance Qualifier at the Reggie Lewis Center to shatter a school record that was set in 1988. The previous record was 10:13. Taylor Anderson also ran well in the 600 (1:50) for Fenwick.

BOYS TRACK

Fenwick trio runs well: Bryan Mendes (1:31) and Dan Deschenes (1:33) ran well in the 600 for Fenwick, while senior captain Chris Poirier ran a 39.1 in the 300 at the Last Chance Qualifier at the Reggie Lewis Center.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 60, ENDICOTT 47: The Gulls (12-8) never got going offensively and lost for the first time at home in six outings. Samantha Crough scored 18 points, and Julie Manning had a solid effort off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds.

EASTERN NAZARENE 57, gordon 44: Freshman Leanna Tallamy led all players with 24 points and 16 rebounds, recording her 12th double-double of the season. Tallamy also tallied four steals, two blocks and two assists for the Fighting Scots (7-14).

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Western New England 83, Endicott 74: The Gulls built a five-point halftime lead (41-36) but watched it slip away in the second half. Andre Makris had 18 points and nine rebounds for Endicott (12-8, 7-6 CCC), while Lance Greene (14 points) and Lachlan Magee (10) joined him in double figures.

GORDON 74, Eastern Nazarene 58: David Dempsey led the Fighting Scots (8-13) in their second win in a row with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Park Thomas dished out 10 assists to go along with his six points.

COLLEGE HOCKEY

Salem State 2, Fitchburg State 2: The Vikings (11-6-2) lost the lead in the third period for the second straight game, but goals by Matt Genovese and Eric DeFelice in the first period made sure Salem State came away with at least one point. Goalie Ryan Sutliffe made 31 saves, including five in overtime.
