Our sports staff weighs in:
PHIL STACEY: A senior backup or third-stringer scores a touchdown, records a sack, or picks off a pass in a blowout win. Those are the character guys that know they won’t play much, but go to practice every day to make themselves and their teammates better; you’ve gotta feel good when they get rewarded.
MATT JENKINS: A talented running back gets into the secondary. It’s hard to beat the excitement of that “will he or won’t he” break the big one? moment.
MATT WILLIAMS: Trick plays work. It doesn’t matter if it’s the holder on a field goal rolling out and throwing a touchdown pass, or the quarterback handing off to a receiver before sprinting out wide behind the sleeping defense. It takes guts to call trick plays and precision execution by the players to make sure the coach doesn’t regret it.
GIANNA ADDARIO: Teams pull off last-minute rallies. The weekly games are exciting enough, but when a squad that’s down late in the contest ends up winning, those always seem to be the best stories at the end of the season.
JEAN DePLACIDO: Teams recover an onsides kick, then drive for a touchdown on the ensuing possession.
DAN HARRISON: A lineman recovers a fumble or grabs an interception with room to run.
