2013 SALEM NEWS TEAM BY TEAM GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEWS

Beverly

Last year’s record: 18-4-0 (Won Division 1 North title, fell in state semis)

Head coach: Kristin Simpson (10th season)

Captains: Casey Cook, Sr., Mid; Diandra Crowley, Sr., D; Kristen O’Connor, Sr., D/Mid; Caitlin Harty, Sr., F

Other players to watch: Eva Gourdeau, Jr., F; Rose Turner, Jr., D/Mid; Faith Piotrowski, Jr., F; Jess Goodal, Sr., D/Mid; Kadrianna Letts, Fr., D; Kyra Wolonsavich, Jr. GK.

Outlook: The Panthers return the vast majority of their goal scoring and defense from a year ago, when the team won its first Division 1 North title. Senior Caitlin Harty and junior Eva Gourdeau could form the top 1-2 scoring punch in the state; two-year captain Diandra Crowley is a rock on defense and Kristen O’Connor is one of the most versatile players in the area. Beverly has veteran leadership and experience, and having Casey Cook at midfield (she played goalie in the state tournament last year) should make their possession game stronger. The Panthers are certainly one of the teams to beat in the NEC and in the realigned Division 2 North section.

Bishop Fenwick

Last year’s record: 10-6-4 (Lost in Division 2 North quarters)

Head coach: Karen Guillemette (8th season)

Captains: Annette Ruggiero, Sr., F; Vicki Caruso, Sr., F; Caitlin Parrott, Sr., Mid.

Other players to watch: Merry Harrington, So., GK; Ellen Fantozzi, So., F; Jenny Nasser, Jr., D; Jackie Edgett, Jr., Mid; Danielle Deltorto, So., F.

Outlook: The Crusaders are young, but have a solid nucleus led by the captains. Ruggiero is a vocal leader up front and with Caruso and Parrott in the mix, goal scoring could be a relative strength. Five freshmen made the varsity squad and could contribute right away. An athletic, defensively sound Fenwick team should be in the mix in the always tough Catholic Central League.
