Thursday's area roundup: Prep golf takes down defending state champs

GOLF

St. John’s Prep 234, St. John’s Shrewsbury 235: Sophomores Steven Dilisio and James Turner each shot even par (36) to lead the way for the Eagles (1-0) against the defending state champs. Jeff O’Connor (38) and Chris Francoeur (39) also had impressive starts in the season opener.

Ipswich 140, Triton: The Tigers earned their first win of season behind strong play by Austin Rubino (29 points), John O’Brien (25), Jack Maino (24) and Quinn O’Connor (24).

Arlington Catholic 169, Danvers 119: Sophomore Mike Plansky shot 3 over par and earned 31 points for the Falcons (0-2).

Beverly 199, Bishop Fenwick 167: The Panthers improved to 3-0 in a match contested under points rules. Sheamus Desmond led the way with 28 points and Greg Hall also had 28 for Beverly and Garrett Desmond chipped in 26.

FIELD HOCKEY

Bishop Fenwick 3, Arlington Catholic 0: The Crusaders evened out their record at 1-1, sweeping their conference foe 25-8, 25-13, 25-8. Kate Lipka and Gianna Pizzano each had nine kills, while Jen Crovo finished with 10 digs and Tess McLaughlin chipped in with 22 assists in the victory.

Greater Lowell 3, North Shore Tech 0: Sophomore setter Dianna LeBlanc played well in her first ever varsity game for the Bulldogs (0-1).

agateHed:COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

Endicott 5, Salem State 4: Emily Sawchuck’s second goal of the game put Endicott ahead in the 58th minute and the Gulls (1-1) held on to win. Salem State’s Kathleen Clark had tied it 4-4 earlier in the second half and the Lady Vikings (0-1) had the lead three times before Endicott took control. MacKenzie Hurst also had two goals and Alyssa Clark scored once for the Gulls and Salem State’s Lauren Pazdziorny had a goal and two assists. Katie Pietrini also scored for SSU as did Paige McNickol.

Gordon 5, Southern Maine 4: The Fighting Scots scored the last four goals of the game, including the tying and winning tallies by Brittany Hawkins in the second half. Courtney Scott had three goals and two assists for Gordon, Hawkins also had a pair of helpers and goalie Shannon Hicks posted a second half shutout.

agateHed:WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS

Gordon 5, Colby-Sawyer 4: Caroline Hall, Rebecca Levy and Hannah Damon each won singles matches in straight sets as Gordon (1-0) won their opening match of the fall. Tawnie Yeaw and Lily Drescher (8-6) and Jessie Dupre and Liann Van Volkinburg (8-5) took two doubles points to push Gordon over the edge.
