Marblehead girls soccer opens with shutout win


Marblehead 1, Rockport 0: Sophomore Mia Bongiorno sent a free kick into the net with 18 minutes to play as Marblehead (1-0) got an outstanding team effort in a season opening win. Sophomore Lauren Unterborn made two saves to earn her first varsity shutout.

Bishop Fenwick 5, Arlington Catholic 0: The Crusaders (3-0) earned their second straight shutout as Merry Harrington and Emily Rocker split time in net. Vicky Caruso had two goals to lead a balanced Fenwick offense and Danielle Deltorto, Annette Ruggiero and Abbey Rocket each scored once.

Beverly 3, Lynn Classical 3: The Rams scored with two minutes left in regulation to earn a point against previously unblemished Beverly (2-0-1). Caitlin Harty had a pair of goals as Beverly trailed 1-0 and then led 2-1. Caitlyn Munzing scored to give Beverly a 3-2 lead that didn’t last and junior Eva Gourdeau assisted on all three goals.

Waring 8, Landmark 1: Junior Isabelle Cookson and freshman Hattie Cookson each buried a pair of goals and Waring took its season opener.

Masconomet 9, Triton 2: Kaleigh White scored a hat trick to give her seven goals in two games as the Chieftains (2-0) rolled to an easy win. Julia O’Reilly finished with a pair of goals while Kate Kitsakos also had two. Paige Pratt contributed three assists in the win while Sarah Katz and Izzy Scarpone were among the stars defensively.

Ipswich 0, Georgetown 0: Despite constantly rotating fresh bodies on a 90-plus degree day and outshooting their foes 18-2, the Tigers (1-0-2) were forced to settle for a scoreless tie. Senior sweeper Emily Brengle had a strong game defensively for Ipswich, which got a shutout from Hannah Lynch.


Berwick 3, Pingree 0: Captains Connor Reardon, Reese Fulmer and Ben Rotner all played well in Pingree’s season opening setback.

St. John’s Prep 8, Malden Catholic 1: Junior Patrick Foley had a hat trick and scored the first three goals of his varsity career as the Eagles (1-0-1) took care of their Catholic Conference opener. Senior Matt Chilton also had a hat trick and junior Sam Perel and sophomore Josh Lang both also netted their first varsity goals.
