YOUTH BASKETBALL

Salem Youth Basketball registration for the fall/winter league will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Council on Aging Building, 5 Broad Street, from 5-8 p.m. This is for boys and girls ages 9-15. RUNNING

The Coastal 5K Run for the Beach is set for Sunday, Sept. 12 at Lynch Park in Beverly, beginning at 10 a.m.. The $25 entry fee is tax deductible. Proceeds benefit Salem Sound Coastwatch Adopt a Beach program, a local non-profit environmental orginazation working to keep beaches and coastal waters clean. CHEERLEADING

BASKETBALL OFFICIATING

Board 130, the local board of basketball officials, will be offering a class for anyone interested in becoming a basketball official. The class, which starts on Sept. 27, and runs for five weeks, will be held at North Andover High. The IAABO exam for new officials will be held on Nov. 1 at Salem High. The officiating classes will be held on Sept. 27, Sept. 29, and Oct. 4, 6, 12, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27, with all sessions starting at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $125. The Hit Zone in Swampscott has announced that fall baseball for players ages 8-18 will be held beginning on Sept. 11. The games will be played on weekend for six weeks. For more specific information, call 781-592-4487 or go online at www.the-hit-zone.com

BASKETBALL

American Sign Language (ASL) Sports will be holding its inaugural basketball clinic on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Glen Urquhart School in Beverly Farms. All children who are hearing impaired and/or physically challenged are invited to attend. The clinics are free of charge and will have experienced youth basketball players to help train the children. American Sign Language interpreters will be on-site throughout the clinic. Snacks, drinks and pizza will be provided. Hoop Dreams, a preseason basketball program for girls only, will be held at Salem State College for players ages 8-18 Sundays from 9-11 a.m. starting Sept. 12. Directed by SSU head women's basketball coach Tim Shea, the program consists of intense training in those skills chosen by the player after consultation with our staff. There is a 6-to-1 maximum player-to-coach ratio and enrollment is limited, so pre-registration is required.
