Salem Youth Football impresses in first-week matchups with Saugus

FOOTBALL

GLADIATOR DIVISION (Grades 7 and 8)

Salem 28, Saugus 12: Anthony Tejada bolted for a 70-yard touchdown run for Salem, and Brent Jackson pulled down a 20-yard touchdown catch on a great ball from quarterback Taron Wigfall. Glen Gard and John Gillooly added touchdown scampers of their own while Ethan Mercedes, Jael Pena, Tino Tucker and Pete Duffy all had tremendous games for the Witches, who improved to 1-0 on the season.

SPARTAN DIVISION (Grades 5 and 6)

Salem 25, Saugus 7: Henry Vlaughn, Aneudy Espinal and Jared Lubas led the Witches (1-0) on the ground with a touchdown each while Cedric Gutierrez provided a spark on the defensive side of the ball with an interception returned for a touchdown. Kyle Harvey, Nathan Estes and Jaycob Reynoso all played well for Salem.

CRUSADER DIVISION (Grades 3 and 4)

Salem 19, Saugus 0: Nathaniel Minaya could not be stopped as the Witches running back dashed for touchdowns of 60 and 70 yards while teammate Devin Tolbert added a 40-yard touchdown run of his own. The defense for Salem forced six turnovers led by Noah Santerre, Melkinne Batista, Brandon Harvey, Dan Leberge, Jack Miano and Tom Harrington.

TITAN DIVISION (Grades 1 and 2)

Saugus 20, Titans 6: Jake Connolly rushed for the lone Salem (0-1) touchdown while Bob Jellison had an all- around outstanding game.
