Area roundup: Endicott baseball coach earns 100th victory

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Endicott baseball coach Bryan Haley didn't have a lot to smile about as his team dropped its first three games in Florida. Yesterday, all that changed for the better.

The Gulls exploded for 23 runs in two games, and grabbed their first win of 2012 with a 14-3 decision over Fitchburg State. The win was Haley's 100th as the Gulls' skipper.

Tad Gold had three hits and three RBI in the win and Eric Lemke also had three hits.

In the second end of a doubleheader yesterday, Endicott fell to St. Joe's of Maine, 11-9, despite RBI from former Gloucester star Connor Ressel and former Peabody standout Danny Mello.

Daniel Webster sweeps Gordon: The Fighting Scots (0-5) lost both ends of a doubleheader against Daniel Webster in Lake Myrtle, Florida by scores of 12-4 and 10-1.

Salem State 10, Nichols 0: The Vikings improved to 5-1 on the season with Ryan Beliveau, Mike Owens, Mike Devilly and Ben Somsyck combining for the shutout. Beverly's Ethan Trowt belted a triple to break the game open and Chris Cocci, Brett Cahill and Kyle McElroy each had two hits.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Endicott Splits: The Gulls (4-1) lost their first game of the season at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida, falling to Lake Forest, 4-3, before rallying to topple St. Norbert, 10-8, in their second game yesterday. Krista Fales' two-run knock broke an 8-8 tie in the win while Colleen Martin had three hits and two RBI.

Gordon drops two: Gordon played Norwich for the second time in as many days and bounced back from a 10-1 loss to push the Cadets to extra innings. Still, Gordon fell, 7-6, in nine innings and also lost to Montreat, 6-2, in a doubleheader at Myrtle Beach.

Salem State Wins Two: Peabody's Nicole Wilson threw a five-hitter as the Lady Vikings (5-1) beat Wisconsin Lutheran, 11-1, and also took down Mount Mary College, 7-0. Alyssa Bryan and Jeanette Douette hit back-to-back homers to key Salem State's offensive explosion while Fenwick grads Gabbie Vitale and Christina Cipriani had two hits along with Lauren Garchisky and Lauren Dicredico.
