Friday's area roundup: Salem State women's hoop prevail in opener

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Salem State 66, New Jersey City 63: Rachael Carter finished with 18 points and six rebounds as the Lady Vikings began their season with a win in the opening round of the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament. Peabody’s Ginny Fleming scored the basket that put Salem State ahead for good at 62-60; she finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Gloucester’s Lara Bruni added 15 points and eight boards for Salem State, which won despite trailing by 12 points in the second half.

Endicott 80, MCLA 57: Junior Kayleen Wall scored 19 points as the Gulls won their season opener at the Keene State Tip-Off Tournament. Senior Jen White added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Endicott, which will face Keene State in the finals today (3 p.m.).

Gordon 62, Lasell 53 (OT): The Scots outscored the visitors 13-4 in the extra session to prevail in their home opener. Guard Brooke Kratche led the way offensively with 16 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and eight steals in an excellent all-around performance. Skylar Bareford added a dozen points while fellow forward Fredi Nielsen added 11; both players added six rebounds. Lauren Kranyak came off the bench and contributed nine points, four rebounds and two assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Endicott 89, Fisher 78: Kamahl Walker came off the bench to score 23 points and he added five rebounds and four assists as the Gulls won their opener. John Henault added 18 points and six rebounds while Andre Makris chipped in with 14.

Goucher 80, Gordon 67: Despite 14 points and 10 rebounds from Hans Miersma, the Scots led a 10-point halftime lead slip away in dropping their season opener in Maryland. Jason Dempsey came off the bench to grab a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to scoring 12 points, while Taylor Bajema was also in double figures with 10 points.

Salem State 93, Rutgers-Newark 88: Bryan Ortiz scored 25 points as the Vikings (1-0) shot out to an early lead while Hamed Akanni had 20 points and 10 rebounds to pave the way to victory in Williamstown. Andrew White’s hot shooting early on was also key for Salem State, which will meet Southern Vermont today in the Williams College Tip-Off Tournament.
