Danvers Babe Ruth Baseball has always honored the legacy of Steven W. Bekel, and they’ll continue to do so with the establishment of the Steven W. Bekel Memorial Scholarship in his memory this year.
The scholarship is in addition to the Thomas Goniprow Memorial Scholarship, which is sponsored by Danvers Senior Babe Ruth. All graduating seniors that participated in Danvers Babe Ruth Baseball are eligible for the Bekel Scholarship, while all those that participated in Senior Babe Ruth are also eligible for the Goniprow Scholarship.
Bekel passed away in 2009. The then 15-year-old freshman at St. John’s Prep was involved in a single-car accident which also tragically took the life of his dad, William. They were on their way to a Danvers Babe Ruth baseball game when the accident happened.
Last summer, the town of Danvers added Bekel’s name to the monument at Memorial Field at Plains Park. He was active in Danvers youth sports, playing soccer, baseball and basketball, and played for the Red Sox of Danvers Babe Ruth. He received a sportsmanship award in 2008.
The Goniprow Scholarship memorializes an inspirational former Danvers Babe Ruth player who passed away in 2005, at the age of 20, after a courageous battle with Hodgkins lymphoma. He continued to play the game he loves even after his diagnosis.
Requirements and applications for both scholarships are available at the Danvers High School guidance office. Danvers Babe Ruth alumni that do not attend Danvers High School are also eligible and can obtain an application directly from Danvers Babe Ruth by e-mail (president@danversbaberuth.com). All applications must be received by April 1, 2013.
Those wishing to donate to help offset the cost of these scholarships should send contributions to Danvers Babe Ruth, PO Box 2182, Danvers, MA 01923.
