Hamilton-Wenham cross country teams impress at Northeast Regional

The Hamilton-Wenham cross country teams traveled to New York to see how they measured up with some of the best competition in the Northeast.

The Generals ended up having an impressive weekend.

The Hamilton-Wenham girls team placed 12th out of 35 teams at Bowdoin Park in the NXN Northeast Regionals, racing against teams from New England, plus New Jersey and Pennsylvannia.

Jeanine Zheng was 31st in 19:34 to pace the Generals while Emily Horgan (75th, 20:13), Olivia Horgan (81st, 20:18), Meghan Stone (94th, 20:29) and Amanda Burnett (95th, 20:29) also placed in the top 100.

On the boys’ side, Hamilton-Wenham placed 27th out of 37 teams. Matt Gillis was the top finisher for the Generals, placing 63rd in 17:00. Michael Allara (133rd, 17:47), Jack Gourdeau (175th, 18:11), John Blatchford (184th, 18:15) and Tim Caves (211th, 18:36) also ran well.

“It was probably the strongest group of teams we have ever faced,” Hamilton-Wenham coach Steve Sawyer said. “It was unbelievable competition, but both teams competed very well. It was a good experience to compete at that level.”
