The Salem State University men’s basketball team hit the court running last night in their season opener, and the Vikings’ effort is something they hope they can carry throughout the season.
The Vikings took their first lead with 13 minutes to play in the first half and never looked back, rolling to an 87-60 victory over the Coast Guard in the opening game of the Williams Tip-Off Tournament. The win gave head coach Chris Harvey his 200th career victory, and 96th at Salem State.
Salem State will play Williams today (3 p.m.) in the tip-off final.
Nate Simpson led the Vikings with 19 points and Justin Nieves pitched in 18 for the winners. Hanell Velez got the Vikings going in the first half, scoring 11 points before intermission.
Endicott 74, Framingham State 62: The Gulls opened the season with a win and will play host Rivier in the final of the Rivier Coca-Cola Tip Off Tournament today (2 p.m.).
Gordon 56, Newbury 45: Lauren Kranyak opened the season with a huge game, scoring 24 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and coming away with five steals as the Fighting Scots started with a victory. Brooke Kratche contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and five steals while Skylar Bareford produced nine points and five assists.
