Fran Hannon of Bishop Fenwick and Catarina Rocha of Peabody have been selected as the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for November.
Catarina, a senior cross country runner, captured the state championship and the Northeast Regional Foot Locker championships. She will be running in the national championships in San Diego today. In addition, The Salem News’ Runner of the Year was the Northeastern Conference champion in the league meet, setting the course record at Bradley Palmer State Park (17:20). She also set the course record at the Division 1 Eastern Mass. meet (17:27). Her GPA is 3.66 and she is ranked 38th out of a class of 476. In addition, she is the secretary of her senior class, member of the Captains Council and is involved in peer mediation.
Fran, a quarterback on the football team, led the Fenwick Crusaders to an 8-3 record this season, including a perfect 3-0 mark in November. Over the last three games, he threw for 724 yards to go along with seven touchdown passes. Included in that was a come-from-behind 23-22 victory on Thanksgiving — the last being a 35-yard scoring pass with 25 seconds left in the game. For his efforts, he received the Sal Tripoli Award as the game’s Most Valuable Player. In the classroom, Fran has a 4.2 GPA and has spent his spare time helping a boy from Melrose with cerebral palsy: carrying the boy, and his wheelchair, up and down the three flights of stairs of his home.
