Wednesday's area roundup: Senior laden Salem girls lacrosse opens with win

The Salem High girls lacrosse team got off to a fast start yesterday, blasting Lowell Tech 17-1 in the Witches first game of the season.

With 10 seniors on the squad, head coach Jessica Trioli wasn’t surprised to see her Witches (1-0) in top form.

“I have 10 seniors who’ve been with me for four yeas,” said Trioli. “They’ve been clicking since day one. They knew what was expected coming in.”

Alexa Gilbert, Emily Coelho and Lia Bounfiglio led the scoring attack with four goals each but it was the Witches defense that really impressed, surrendering just four shots on goal that all came off of penalty shot opportunities. Coelho also had eight ground balls with teammate Gabby Rocheville scooping up five.

Goalie Abigail Meadowcroft had four strong saves while Gilbert dominated the face offs giving Salem possession after possession to help build the lead.

Beverly 10, Newburyport 5: Senior captain Camden Vitale poured in a team-high five goals for the Panthers (1-0) while fellow senior captain Felicity Otterbein anchored an impressive defensive performance that saw Beverly take an 8-0 lead into the second half. Grace Otterbein had three goals, Alicia Cecchini and Meagan Henrichon added a goal each while senior Nicole Woods was extremely impressive between the pipes making her first start in goal since her freshman year.

Arlington Catholic 10, Bishop Fenwick 8: Caroline Crawford (three goals), Merry Harrington (two goals) and Tessa McLaughlin (two goals) carried the offense for Bishop Fenwick (1-1). Junior Jackie Hart led the defensive effort along with goalie Meghan Woodworth who made 16 saves in the losing effort.

Gorton 14, Pingree 9: Netminder C.J. White made 14 saves but Pingree (0-1) dropped its season opener. Arjen Stegstra led the offense with three goals and one assist while Carter Rossano had a hand in two-thirds of his team’s tallies with a goal and five assists.
