WOMEN'S SOCCER
When the Endicott women's soccer team headed into penalty kicks against SUNY Geneseo in the first round of the NCAA tournament, visions of last year's NCAA tournament loss to Williams Smith — in which the Gulls were sent packing in the PK round — must have been on the minds of all its players.
But this year was different as the Gulls (17-4-1) went eight shooters deep in the penalty kicks before Caitlin Peters put home the game-winner advancing Endicott to the second round.
The Gulls were eliminated, however, with a 1-0 loss to Messiah College late last night.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half against SUNY Geneseo Danvers native Kayla Corbett took a pass from Allyson Bellemore and buried it in the back of the net to tie things up for Endicott. Goalkeeper Amy Meuse was outstanding in net stopping 23 of the 24 shots she faced and then coming up with key saves in the PK to give Endicott the win.
Messiah (21-0-1) scored a late goal in the second half last night to eliminate the Gulls.
