IPSWICH — It was only fitting that as Ipswich put a 31-game losing streak behind it with a stirring 14-13 Thanksgiving morning win over Hamilton-Wenham, the Tiger program made a permanent connection to a much brighter part of its past.
The field at Ipswich High will now be known as Jake Welch Stadium, a fitting honor made official during a halftime ceremony.
Welch coached the Tigers from 1964-2000, leading them to five state titles, eight Cape Ann League crowns and 224 victories. He is 12th all-time in winning percentage among Massachusetts high school coaches.
"The good news is that I'm still standing up," Welch joked in his opening remarks in front of 1,455 fans. "Thanksgiving has always been my favorite day because of family, friends and football."
The former U.S. Navy Seal compiled a 23-12-1 record on Thanksgiving Day.
"800 to 1,000 players came through my program, " Welch added. "They were the toughest kids in the Cape Ann League."
Besides thanking former and current players, Welch also acknowledged cheerleaders and band members for their support.
"I'll always be a part of Ipswich, forever," he said. "Happy Thanksgiving and I love you all."
