Tuesday's area roundup: Fenwick's Farrell wins another weight throw state title

TRACK AND FIELD

Bishop Fenwick captain Shaun Farrell successfully defended his state championship at the Massachusetts Scholastic Weight Throw Championships yesterday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.

The senior from Peabody had no problem in flinging the weight throw 54-feet-2 inches to win his second consecutive state crown.

"A lot of (weight throwing) has to do with rhythm and being able to feel it," said Fenwick head coach Jay Smith. "Shaun's a three-turn thrower who gets power into that last turn and, combined with that rhythm, the throw just builds until he releases it."

With his throw, Farrell qualified for Weight Throw Nationals at the Armory in New York March 9-11. "Shaun's got an opportunity to really make something happen," said Smith.

In addition, Fenwick senior Joe Russo placed fifth overall (43-9 1/2) while junior Patrick Corcoran of Beverly finished in sixth place with a throw of 43-11/2 in only his second time throwing this season.

On the girls' side, Fenwick junior Maggie Lepley finished second with a personal best throw of 33-61/2. She, too, will be headed to Nationals in two-and-a-half weeks.
