Salem News 2013 Football all-star team

Bishop Fenwick Senior

Trying to find a football player in Massachusetts that meant more to his team and made an impact in more ways than Bishop Fenwick’s Nick Bona might just be impossible. The Catholic Central League Most Valuable Player capped a sensational four-year career in a magical way, guiding the Crusaders to a 13-0 record and a Division 5 Super Bowl title Saturday night at Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium.

Bona was counted on in all phases of the game this season. As a quarterback, he completed 78 of 154 passes for 1,407 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also ran the football with the power of a fullback and the speed of a shifty tailback, gaining 889 yards and 12 more scores. He led the team to a new program record of 510 points.

As good as Bona’s numbers were offensively, his performance on the defensive side made have been more impressive. He finished the year with more than 200 tackles, resetting the school record that he previously set as a junior. He hit with a fearlessness rarely seen in high school football players.

Bona also served as the team’s kicker on kickoffs — usually running down the field to make the tackle — and was a valuable blocker on kick returns.

A starter on defense since freshman year, Bona ended up with 498 career tackles. No one else in Fenwick history ever reached 300. His four-year yardage total (rushing, passing, receiving yard combined) was 3,153, which ranks him fifth in school history. He remains undecided on college, but hopes to continue playing football.
