2013 Salem News Golf Player of the Year
St. John’s Prep, Sophomore
During St. John’s Prep golf coach Larry O’Neill’s 25 years of coaching, he’s witnessed some great players come through the ranks. By the time Steven DiLisio graduates from St. John’s Prep, O’Neill feels he just might end up in a class all by himself.
In his sophomore year, DiLisio just completed his second year playing No. 1 for the Eagles and produced incredible numbers, achieving both individual and team success in the process. He blew away the competition in the Catholic Conference Individual Tournament, capturing the title by a margin of six shots with a 71 at Black Swan Country Club. He was named Catholic Conference MVP and shot a 69 at Bradford Country Club to win the Division 1 North individual title.
DiLisio finished as runner-up in the Division 1 state championship, shooting a 72 at Black Swan, but his performance helped the Eagles lock up the team championship.
His stroke average for the year was 36.1 for nine holes and he shot par or better in 11 matches, including a 4-under par 32 against St. John’s of Shrewsbury at Wachusett Country Club. He hit 65 percent of the fairways and 74 percent of greens in regulation.
DiLisio, now a two-time Salem News all-star, has already been named St. John’s Prep golf MVP twice with two seasons remaining.
