Tuesday's Area roundup: Salem lacrosse clinches NEC South



Gloucester 4, Salem 1: Third singles player Guthrie Scrimgeour won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, for the Witches (3-7). Tahmid Raji also played well for Salem.

Masconomet 4, Lynnfield 1: The doubles teams of Jack Roscoe/Nick Drago (6-3, 6-4) and Sam Gordon/Clay Greenberg (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) won for Masco (9-2, 6-0 CAL). Cam Netland (6-1, 6-1) and Jon Cabour (6-2, 7-6) also picked up singles victories.

St. John’s Shrewsbury 3, St. John’s Prep 2: The Eagles battled one of the top teams in the state to the very end but suffered a narrow defeat. Chris Toner won at first singles, 7-6 (13-11), 6-3, and Dan Cunningham prevailed at third singles, 5-7, 6-3, 12-10. The Prep slipped to 9-2.


Waring 19, Gann 5: Ellie Wright, Sarah Pfifer and Maddie Crowley all notched their first goals of the season as Waring improved to 6-2. Sarah Kessler also had an outstanding game in the midfield and defense for Waring.

Salem 17, Winthrop 11: Courtney Maurice had four goals and three assists and Emily Coelho added three goals and three assists as the Witches (7-3) stayed unbeaten against the NEC South and earned at least a share of the division title. Danielle Pynn made eight saves, Lia Buonfiglio had a goal with four assists and Xhulia Kanani scored two goals with two helpers.


Whitter 4, North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 2: Pitcher Kaera Wyse struck out nine and held Whittier off the board after the third, but the damage was done and North Shore (7-5) was limited to four hits. Ashley Blum had two hits and one RBI, Dianna LeBlanc’s bunt single drove in a run and Christa Leger also hit safely.

Masconomet 9, Andover 8: The Chieftains built a 9-3 lead in the early innings and held off a late Golden Warrior rally to move to 8-2 on the season.

Marblehead 12, Saugus 0: Michaela Leblanc surrendered only two hits and struck out five as the Magicians won in six innings. Olivia Vener had a single, double and triple and Emily Messinger added three hits and two RBI for Marblehead (9-4). Mckenna Barrett and Emily Promise (RBI) each had two hits for the winners.
