---- — The Masco Youth/Mercury Rising wrestling program enjoyed great success this winter not only at the state level but against the best young wrestlers from across New England. Two individuals had outstanding performances that resulted in first ever achievements for the program, which includes several towns from across the North Shore.
Jack Darling won the Youth New England Tournament which was held at Lowell High School earlier this month. In the grades 5-6 Novice flight Darling was tops in the 77 pound class, the first New England individual championship for a Masco Youth wrestler.
Caridad Nugent placed fifth for grades 3-4 at 72 pounds. Nugent’s finish was the best in New England for a girl wrestling in a boys’ tournament.
Ryan Garlitz (74) and Quinn Holland (136) took second while Colby Holland was fourth (84) in the grades 7-8 Middle School flight. Sean Hebert (81) and Joey Perkins (123) were second in grades 5-6 while Harrison Shapiro (111) took third and Billy Stevens (86) was sixth. Ian Darling placed fourth (68) while Alex Schaeublin (52) and Adam Schaeublin (60) were sixth in the grades 3-4 Intermediate flight.
As a result of all these strong performances Masco won the New England grades 3-8 team title.
Masco Youth also won the state team championship for grades 3-4, which was held at Salem High. Luke Connelly (42), Alex Schaeublin (53), Ian Darling (67), and Griffin Coyne (100) all finished first in their respective weight classes while Jo Dailey (62), Caridad Nugent (72), Nicholas Sirota (80), Jack Gilmore (82), and Talia Hebert (87) were second. Third place finishers were Christian DiBlasi (51), Miles Darling (52), Adam Schaeublin (60), Jake Connelly (57), and Jack Rigol (63). J. T. Bates (58) and Hayden Gallo (59) were fourth.
At K-2 states Daniella Nugent (41), Luke Connelly (42), Paige Garlitz (50), Miles Darling (52), Alex Schaeublin (53), Sam Oliverie (51), Cord Vallis (51), Ryan Saslaw (54), Colin Nugent (59), and Will Mitchell (60) were all champions. Kevin Noka (52), Cody Broadbent (64), and Sean Stevens (65) finished second while John Oliverie (44), Mario Simone (45), and Able Alcaron (65) placed third.
Trevor Nugent returned to the mats after being out with an injury for two months and finished in the top eight in the 63 pound weight division.
In the state tournament for grades 5-6 Masco was the winner for the second year in a row led by state champs Harrison Shapiro and Jack Darling. Sean Hebert was second, Joey Perkins third, and Jesse Burns fourth.
In the girls New England Tournament at Oak Hill High School in Wales, Maine Marisol Nugent (70) and Caridad Nugent (75) took first. Daniella Nugent (45) was second, and Bridgette O’Brien (90) finished third.
The tournament wins for Masco/Mercury Rising have been very impressive this year. They include the Danbury Duals, Big Red Championship, North East Region League Tournament, grades 5-6 North Sectionals, 5-6 states, 3-4 states, and Youth New England Team Championship for grades 3-8.
