Thursday's area roundup: Verrette helps Marblehead swimmers splash past Peabody

Marblehead 99, Peabody 78: Hannah Verrette captured first in the 200 free (2:01.77) as well as the 500 free (5:24.64) to help her Magician team improve to 5-0 on the season. Charlie Seltzer was first in the 100 butterfly (54.70) and 100 dash (1:02.78). Ellie Ronin (200 IM, 2:18.81), Tom Rockett (50 free, 25:08), Kylie Cronin (100 back, 1:06.96) and Jake Driscoll (diving, 197.30) all took first in their respective events.

Winning events for the Tanners was Alex Strakosha (100 free). Paige Hayward qualified for sectionals in diving with a score of 168.6, and Maria Strakosha achieved a cut time for states in the 200 IM (2:26.11). It was also Senior Night for the Tanners who honored Ciara Rossi, Christine Shea, John Domenico, Ian Lam, Alex Strakosha and Travis Wojcik.

Swampscott 89, Salem 86: Danielle Mayblum (diving), Emily Guo (200 IM) and the 400 free relay team earned wins for the Big Blue (2-3).

Despite only having 12 swimmers, the Witches managed to keep things close. Kevin Clyne made a sectional cut and took first in the 50 free (23.98), Melissa Trainor won the 500 free, Michael Redico made a sectional cut in the 200 free, while Brian Dunning had an impressive performance in the 100 free, finished second.

Danvers 99, Lynn English 84: Mitch Bussone (100 breast), Cambria Cloutier (100 back), Curtis Cunningham (50 and 100 free), Josh Mentzer (200 IM) all had wins for the Falcons (4-1). Danvers also took first in the medley relay (Jimmy Hopkins, Bussone, Mentzer and Cunningham), 200 free relay (Matt Rizzo, Bussone, Mitch Gent and Mentzer) and the 400 free relay (Athena Velonis, Sarah Roach, Cloutier and Cunningham).

Masconomet 94, Manchester Essex 74: Carly Soares (500 free), Alex Galaraneau (200 IM, 100 free), Michael Bartley (200 free, 100 butterfly) and Lilly Korning (100 back) all had wins for the undefeated Chieftains (6-0). Madison Kelly had a strong finish in the 50 free, coming in at 28.7.

Beverly 94, Revere 67: Sarah Welch (200 IM, 500 free) Astrid Swinson (100 back, 100 breast), Emily Walsh (200 free), Andrea Higgins (100 butterfly) and Rachel Grant (100 free) captured wins for the Panthers (4-1).


St. John’s Prep 117, North Andover 18: The victorious Eagles took the first spots on the slopes at Bradford Ski Area, with Pat McDermott topping the field in a time of 20.48 seconds. Following him, in order, were St. John’s teammates Bobby Holmes (20.53), Joe Cavallaro (20.78), Peter Griffen (21.08) and Michael Hayes (21.11).


Masconomet splits: The Chieftains (13-5) topped Marblehead (45-0) and fell to Brooks School (40-25) in yesterday’s tri-meet. Chase Jeffreys (126 pounds), Tyler Cameron (120) and Sam Bart (106) each had a pair of victories for Masconomet.


Beverly 71, Winthrop 38: The Panthers (6-4) put an end to their two-game skid as Jon Berchoff and Kyle Coughlin each scored 18 points in last night’s win. Josh Cairns finished with 12 points, while Jonangel Franco added eight points and seven assists.


ARchbishop Williams 48, Bishop Fenwick 43: Senior captain Kate Lipka drained four three-pointers en route to a team-high 13 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Crusaders (5-6) fell in Braintree. Fellow captain Gianna Pizzano added 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for Fenwick while sophomore Colleen Corcoran added 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and five steals.


Winthrop 6, Masconomet 1: Kylie Currier recorded the Chieftains’ lone goal off an assist from Meghan Hubbard. Junior goaltender Molly Kelly made 10 saves in the loss.


Marblehead 66, Winthrop 20: Olivia Vener (high hurdles), Alyssa Nye (55 dash), Janaya Randal (mile), Carlyn McGrath (300), Kate Huber (1000) and Jillian King (2 mile) all had wins for the Magicians who move to 5-0 on the season.

Peabody 61, Lynn Classical 25: The Tanners (4-1) dominated in the distances races behind Caitlyn Collins (2-mile, 14:23.4), Julia Merchant (mile, 6:07.6), Lauren Barrett (1000, 3:21.3), Carrera Dean (600, 1:51.7) and Cynthia Aroke (300, 45.4). Katie Gallo also picked up a win for Peabody in the shot put (33-3 3/4).


Marblehead 83, Winthrop 3: Ian McIver finished first in the 1000 (2:56.1) as Marblehead remains undefeated at 5-0. Conrad Rousseau won the 600 (1:29.1), while Adam Wantall (55 hurdles) and Hillman Hollister (2 mile) also earned first place finishes.

PEABODY 71, LYNN CLASSICAL 15: The Tanners swept the high jump, shot put, 600, 1000, mile and 2-mile while improving to 5-0 overall. First place finishes were awarded to Alex Bunal (high jump, 5-8), Anthony Cristo (shot put, 44-11 1/2), Michael Thibodeau (300, 43.5), Erico Cordeiro (600, 1:41.7), Patrick Tuhoy (1000, 2:58.8), Manny Vieira (mile, 5:19.2) and Alexander Marcus (2-mile, 11:25.1). Peabody also won the mile relay in 4:22.1.


Bishop Fenwick 124.95, Salem 123.75: Freshman Taylor Cattan finished first in the all-around with a 34.85 and took first all first events for the Crusaders (3-0). Senior Marissa Moschella was second on vault (8.0), and third on floor (8.4), while Julia Leary took third on beam (7.55).

SALEM 123.75, PEABODY 116.70: Sophomore Aubrey Irvine and junior Sam Kinnaly both tied for third place in the all-around (31.0) for Peabody. Irvine tied for first in the vault (8.0) and beam (8.0), while Kinnaly also tied for first on vault (8.0) and beam (8.1) and finished third in floor exercises (8.2).


WESTFIELD STATE 4, SALEM STATE 3: In a clash of first place teams in the MASCAC, the host Owls scored with 1:48 remaining to snap a 3-3 tie and knock off Salem State (8-6), despite the visitors pouring 21 shots on goal in the final period while allowing just four. Cameron Banwell, Chad Goodwin and Chris Mastropietro (on a penalty shot) all had second period goals for the Vikings while Zachary Rondeau had 20 saves in goal. Boxford’s Keaton Cashin added an assist for Salem State.
