Wednesday's area roundup: Cross returns, helps Beverly hold off Malden in OT


CATHOLIC MEMORIAL 3, ST. JOHN’S PREP 2: Captains Jimmy Currier and Mark Etherington staked the visiting Eagles (5-7-1) to a one-goal lead in the second period, but the Knights tied it up with one second to go before intermission and won it in the third period. Senior Brian Conry played well in making 14 saves for St. John’s Prep.


Winthrop 1, Beverly 0: The Vikings scored midway through the first period and Beverly (10-2-1) couldn’t find the back of the net the rest of the way. Goalie Madison Jalbert made 18 saves in the setback.


Masconomet 56, Manchester 30: The Chieftains rolled to 9-1 on the season as Tristan Cluster won the high hurdles, Regan Charie won the dash, Jackson Jennings won the 300, Dan Raphael won the 600, Harry Kent won the 1000, Dan Cosgrove won the mile, David Drigo won the shot put and Nolan Rice took the high jump.

ipswich wins cal crown: Sean Whooley, Charlie Gillis, Neal Coleman and Nate Glaster won the 4x400 relay to put Ipswich (7-2) over North Reading, 44-42, to earn a share of the Cape Ann League title. Tim Lee won the shot put, Ryan White won the high jump, Ryan Bahar won the hurdles, Alex Jean-Charles won the dash and Glaster took the 300 as Ipswich also beat Hamilton-Wenham 61-25.

NST/EA Takes Third: The Hawks (2-1) were third in the CAC meet with 51.5 points just two one and a half points shy of second place Lynn Tech and well behind first place Greater Lawrence which won with 122.5. Phil Simonton won the two mile (11:14.3), Mike Tilton was second in the mile (5:34.8), Anthony Sabbio claimed third in the shot put (37-2.5), Doug Wilson was second in the hurdles (8.4), Demir Taruz took third in the 300 (43.1) and Brendan Hurley captured fourth in the 300 (43.2).


Ipswich Wins CAL title: The 4x400 relay of Jill Calvani, Michaela Hedderman, Chloe Lindahl and Devin Smith won to boost the Tigers (9-0) over Hamilton-Wenham 46-40 and to the CAL crown. Ipswich also beat North Reading 53-33 in a tri-meet with Nora McMorrow winning the dash, Hedderman winning the 300 and Calvani winning the 600.
