Monday's roundup: Saugus opens Sr Babe Ruth playoffs with defeat

NORTHEAST SENIOR BABE RUTH

SAUGUS 6, SALEM-BEVERLY 4: Three runs allowed in the top of the seventh inning gave visiting Saugus a victory in Game 1 of their best-of-3 quarterfinal playoff series against Salem-Beverly.

Sean Curtin of Beverly went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored for the hosts while his cousin, Troy Curtin of Salem, added a two-run single as Salem-Beverly took a 4-3 lead after one inning. George Helios of Beverly pitched the first six innings and allowed just three hits and no earned runs.

Salem-Beverly (12-6) will look to keep its season alive tonight when it plays Game 2 at Stackpole Field in Saugus (5:45 p.m.); should they win, a one-game, winner-take-all would take place back in Salem tomorrow (5:45 p.m.) at Palmer Cove.
