---- — agateHed:SENIOR BABE RUTH
Facing elimination, the Salem Senior Babe Ruth team couldn’t have responded any better.
After dropping the best-of-three series opener two night ago, Salem handled Saugus, 14-1, in a game stopped after five innings.
Salem scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back.
“We got guys on base early and opened up with six runs in the first inning. They didn’t score until the fourth inning and we were up 10-0 after three,” Salem coach Eddie Ryan said. “Christian Montanez threw strikes and the kids behind him made the plays. He threw 47 pitched in five innings, less than 10 pitches in every inning. The defense did their job and that made his job easier.”
Montanez allowed only three hits and got plenty of help from his offense, too.
Zack Leblanc, who stood out defensively at second base, had three hits, two RBI, and two runs. Anthony Levesque added three hits and three RBI, while Greg Hellios also drove in three runs. Sean Curtin contributed two hits and two runs.
Game 3 will be played tonight at Palmer Cove (5:45 p.m.).

Beverly 7, Malden 1: Beverly won its playoff opener behind a complete game effort from pitcher Danny Cashman, who allowed six hits and five walks while striking out three. Beverly played well defensively and got key hits from Anthony DiOrio (2-3, run), Teghan Malionek (2 RBI) and David Maher (RBI). Beverly scored five runs in the third inning to pull away.
Beverly hosts Bedford at Cooney Field tonight (7 p.m.). Cooney Field will also be the host to the league’s semifinals on Saturday (2 p.m. and 5 p.m.) and final on Sunday (1 p.m.). If Beverly defeats Bedford, it would advance to the semis.
