Pingree's Jayne headed to BU to play lacrosse

In hindsight, it was the best move Liz Jayne could have ever made in terms of furthering her lacrosse career.

A senior from Merrimac, Jayne began high school at Pentucket Regional before transferring to the Pingree School after her sophomore year. Now, her lacrosse talents will allow her to continue her career in college, as Jayne has signed on to play at Boston University beginning next year.

“I transferred after my sophomore year because Pingree was challenging both academically and athletically,” said Jayne. “I’m glad I made the move because it’s a better environment.”

Playing attack for the Highlanders last season, Jayne was the team’s leading scorer and was chosen as an All-League player in the Eastern Independent League. She was also Pingree’s Offensive MVP and named to the New England Prep all-star team.

Jayne was also a two-time Cape Ann League all-star at Pentucket during her freshman and sophomore seasons of high school before transferring to Pingree. She began as a defender before moving up to the midfield, and she also ran the 600 for Pentucket during indoor track season.

She is the second Pingree girls lacrosse player who will be going on to play Division 1 lax; teammate Maura Grady of Marblehead, who plays goalie, has already committed to play for James Madison University.

For her outstanding skill set, on-field smarts and leadership qualities, Jayne attracted lots of attention from colleges and eventually narrowed her choices down to either BU or Trinity College in Hartford. Usually the final two schools a student-athlete must choose between are very similar, but that wasn’t the case for Jayne.

“They’re totally different,” she admitted. “I loved the coaches at both schools, but in the end it came down to whether I wanted to dedicate my life to lacrosse or go to a college where the program wasn’t so time consuming year-round.
