Area roundup: Marblehead swimmers pull away from Classical, remain unbeaten

GYMNASTICS

Malden 124.6, Bishop Fenwick 117.9: Marissa Moschela was first on floor with a score of 8.3 but the Crusaders (1-1) fell for the first time this season. Erin Horgan was second on vault (8.3) and third on bars (8.2) for Fenwick and Kristen Kilcommons was second on beam (8.1) and third on floor (7.9).

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UnE 59, Gordon 50: Park Thomas scored 11 points and Jason Dempsey added 10 but the Scots (7-5) had a tough shooting night, hitting just 35 percent of their shots for the game and scoring just 17 second half points in the home setback.

MCLA 77, Salem State 72: The Vikings (9-5) came as close as three down the stretch but couldn’t come all the way back and lost their first conference game of the season. Nate Simpson scored 27 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for Salem State while Andrew White scored 17 with nine boards.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salem State 78, MCLA 71: Sandra Lanier scored 18 points as the Lady Vikings (8-6) went on the road to grab their first MASCAC win of the season. Salem native Ashley White was outstanding with 17 points and seven assists and Bridget Dullea scored 13 with 10 rebounds. Rachel Ledbetter and Lara Bruni were also in double-figures with 10 points each.

UNE 70, Gordon 39: The Fighting Scots (2-10) were out gunned at home by UNE, which remained unbeaten in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. Brooke Kratche led Gordon with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

COLLEGE HOCKEY

Salem State 4, New England College 3: Cam Banwell scored his first goal of the season in the second period to put Salem State (7-4-1) on top for good in a non-league game at Rockett Arena. Banwell also assisted Chad Goodwin’s empty net goal which wound up being the winner after NEC scored with three seconds remaining. Goodwin and Matt Kenline each had a goal and an assist, Banwell had three points, Kyle Phelan had two assists and goalie Ryan Sutliffe made 29 saves to earn his sixth win of the season.
