Area roundup: St. John's Prep clinches Catholic Conference title

It’s been weeks since the St. John’s Prep basketball team, which began the season 13-0, erased any lingering doubts about their team this winter.

Still, clinching a Catholic Conference title few pegged them to the win in the preseason with a 59-54 decision at Catholic Memorial was supremely satisfying for the Eagles, who improved to 7-0 in league play and 14-1 overall.

Senior guard Drex Costello led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds and junior Max Butterbrodt scored a season-high 16 points with eight rebounds.

“It’s a very big accomplishment,” head coach Sean Connolly said. “We lost seven of our top eight guys from last year, so we were very inexperienced and many people gave us a shot to win the league. We’ve really come together. I’m very proud of these guys.”

Sophomore guard Ben Judson scored 14 for the Prep, which led 29-24 at the half and faces rival Central Catholic tomorrow afternoon.

Pingree 61, Concord Academy 44: Freshman Nino Leone recorded his first career double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds as Pingree (14-5, 9-1 EIL) held off the EIL’s third place club. Johnny Spears scored 10 points and had eight rebounds.

Hamilton-Wenham 67, Triton 48: James Foye scored 25 points with five steals and had a strong first half to propel the Generals (8-6) to a home CAL win. Henry Eager had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Shawn Kotch had eight points and Hamilton-Wenham led 39-16 at halftime.

Masconomet 57, Pentucket 42: The Chieftains improved to 8-7 on the season with Ryan Reardon and Alberto Arenaza leading the way with 11 points each. Tighe Van Lenten chipped in 10 for Masconomet, which faces Hamilton-Wenham on Tuesday.

Bishop Fenwick 55, Cristo Rey 50: The Crusaders (6-9) avenged an early season loss to Cristo Rey as Matt Costello scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fenwick played excellent defense in the second half as Joe Buccheri had 10 points and three steals and Ben Maxner scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
