Corcoran, McCormack honored as Moynihan Student-Athletes

For their excellence in both the classroom and athletics, winter track stars Patrick Corcoran of Bishop Fenwick and Liz McCormack of Gloucester High have been named the Male and Female Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for January.

Patrick, a senior at Fenwick and the oldest of seven children, has an outstanding 4.357 grade point average and scored a combined 2,110 on his SATs. He is a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and the vice president of Fenwick’s National Honor Society. As a captain of the Crusaders’ indoor track team, Patrick throws the shot put and the 25-pound weight throw. He participated in the prestigious Dartmouth Relays in January, throwing 58 feet 81/2 inches in the 25-lb. weight throw to place fourth overall, which was his personal best by 2 feet. Because of this throw, he is now ranked 29th in the nation in this event. He also threw a PB by 2 feet in the shot put during a meet against Arlington Catholic; the No. 1 thrower in the Tri-Country League threw 46-81/4 and earned himself a spot in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches’ Association Elite Meet. He has been accepted to Villanova, Providence College and Catholic University in Washington.

Liz, who is also a senior, has had a big season for the Gloucester girls track team throwing the shot put this winter. She is undefeated in Northeastern Conference competition this season, going undefeated in the league while recording a personal best throw of 33 feet 4 inches. Liz also placed fourth at last weekend’s NEC Championship competition. Liz, who has only been a shot putter for two years, will be competing in the Class B state tournament at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston next week, hoping to earn herself a spot at the All-State Meet the following weekend. A member of the National Honor Society, Liz is ranked 24th in her senior class and carries an excellent 91.6 average.
