Monday's Area roundup: Salem baseball earns first win of 2013

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the worst case scenario for the Salem baseball team was extra innings.

The Witches figured they’d win it right then and there.

Josh McRae and Zach LeBlanc hit back-to-back singles and Ben Kapnis came up with a single of his own to plate the winning run as Salem beat Marblehead, 3-2, to earn its first win of the year.

Kapnis was also the winning pitcher, holding the Magicians (4-9) to four hits and striking out four over seven innings.

“The boys needed it. We’ve been working hard, correcting mistakes and competing and we saw that pay off. It was the first time all year we had no errors,” said Salem coach Paul Caron, who earned his first win as well. “In that last inning, we got ahead in counts and saw some fastballs we put bats on.”

LeBlanc played well at shortstop for Salem (1-10) and catcher Austin Connolly did a nice job controlling the game behind the plate.

St. JOhn’s Prep 8, Catholic Memorial 1: The Eagles (14-1) extended their winning streak to 13 games as Nick Bragole  (3-for-4, two runs) hit a solo homer to put SJP on top early. Brandon Bingel struck out nine over six innings to earn the win, Nick Latham doubled and tripled down both lines with two runs and an RBI and Keith Leavitt had an RBI double and scored two runs. Mark Etherington also drove in a run for the Prep, which saw eight players earn RBI.

Beverly 6, Saugus 5: Alex Toomey held off a Sachem charge in the seventh to earn the save as Beverly moved to 9-4. Anthony DiOrio was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kevin Cuneo had a hit and drove in a pair and Luke McDonald was 2-for-4 with two RBI to spark the Panther offense. Eric Messina earned the win with 6 2/3 innings of work and Cam Rogers had a hit, two runs and two stolen bases.

Danvers 6, Lynn Classical 2: Junior Brandon Hyde went the distance and Danvers (13-1) came up with two doubleplays to make sure he earned another win. Ray Arocho hit a 3-run homer to give the Falcons some breathing room, A.J. Couto had two hits and Joe Strangie and Dan Connors both came up with RBI singles.

Peabody 3, Swampscott 1: Senior Pat Ruotolo came on with the bases loaded and two outs and recorded the last four outs to earn his third save. Peabody (13-1) extended its winning streak to 12 by scoring three in the fifth on a Matt McIsaac squeeze and RBI singles by George Tsonis and Frank Lowry. Mike Petrosino had three hits and junior Andrew McLaughlin fanned five and scattered five hits over 5 2/3 innings to earn his fifth win.

Trevor Massey threw six strong innings to keep the Big Blue (5-8) in the game and Greg Collier delivered Swamspcott’s RBI with a single in the sixth.

Bishop Fenwick 11, Matignon 0: Senior right-hander Andrew Lessard allowed four hits and struck out six over six innings as the Crusaders improved to 11-2. Nick Fanjoy had two hits, three RBI and two runs and Brian Burke and Gianni Esposito each had RBI doubles.

Masconomet 11, North Andover 0: Will Twiss fired a complete-game, six-hit shutout. Twiss struck out five to help Masco move to 7-5. The Chieftains scored seven times in the first inning. Speros Varinos had three hits and four RBI, Elias Varinos had one hit, two walks, three runs scored, and an RBI, and Joe Klingensmith added two doubles and two runs.

Chris Rich (two hits, two RBI) and Greg Jain (hit, two walks, two RBI) also stood out for Masco.
