Area roundup: Beverly boys hold off Peabody, qualify for state tourney

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Beverly High boys basketball team is all about finishing, and the Panthers used an immense fourth quarter to finish off Peabody, 73-67, last night and officially qualify for the state tournament.

Beverly (10-6) outscored the Tanners (7-10) 22-15 in the fourth quarter to put away a close game and avenge a loss at Peabody earlier in the season.

"They beat us by two and we needed that tenth win, so we had those things in mind," said Beverly coach Scott Lewis, who has led his team to the state tourney in six of the last seven seasons.

Chris Keaton shook off a sore hamstring and tied his career high in points with 22, Dom Abate scored a career-best 14 points and Aven Jones had 12 points with nine rebounds. Mike Gould led the Tanners with 16 points and nine rebounds while Stephen Girolamo scored 11 with seven assists and Ben Martinez chipped in 10 points.

Marblehead 62, Saugus 59: The Magicians earned their fifth win in a row to improve to 7-8. Senior guard Kyle Forsgard had 14 points and three steals, junior Scott Temme added 13 points and dished out eight assists and Phil Coughlin finished with 11 points and six boards.

Danvers 67, Swampscott 53: Junior point guard Eric Martin had an excellent game with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Falcons (13-2) to victory. Danny Connors came off the bench to contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nick McKenna chipped in 12 points for the winners.

Masconomet 63, Triton 49: Adam Bramanti had all but two of his 17 points in the first quarter as the Chieftains (11-5) rolled out to an 18-point halftime lead at home and cruised from there. Alex Brown added 10 points in the win while Joe Dussi finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Ipswich 54, Rockport 43: The Tigers (5-7) took a 10 points lead into halftime and managed to continue the strong play in the second half. Dan O'Flynn had a team high 21 points, while Brenden Gallagher added 11.

North Andover 71, Hamilton-Wenham 58: The Generals (10-5) trailed by just one at the break and five after three quarters before getting worn down late in the fourth quarter. Jake Lindland hit five three-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points while senior captain Stephen Tam scored a dozen points and had a terrific floor game, according to head coach Doug Hoak.

Lynn Tech 58, No. Shore Tech/Aggie 57: The Bulldogs had to go the length of the floor in the last 15 seconds and couldn't sink the game-winning bucket. Jordan Mendez paced the offence with 17 points while Elijah Alfred had 12 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman point guard Trace Schaejbe had six assists and Jaz Sanchez had seven points with seven assists.

Cathedral 64, Bishop Fenwick 54: The Crusaders (3-11) fell on the road though Matt Costello scored 13 points and pulled down five rebounds. Joe Bucchieri had six assists and Fran Hannon added 12 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Swampscott 55, Danvers 38: Niki Laskaris led the Big Blue (12-3) with 19 points and eight rebounds over the Falcons (3-13). Junior Ara Talkov finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Ashley Arnoldy was Danvers' leading scorer with nine points, but was too much for the dominant Swampscott offense.

Lynn English 42, Salem 33: The Witches (9-6) fell in hard fought battle to the top NEC club on the road. Jaclyn Panneton led Salem with 11 points, while Holbrook Phelan added nine.

Masconomet 61, Triton 19: The Chieftains (12-2) had 12 different scorers in last night's CAL win. Junior Abi Rose four points, five assists and two steals last night, while senior Claire Dew finished with four points and five rebounds. Brooke Stewart led all scorers with 18 points in six minutes.

North Andover 50, Hamilton-wenham 34: The Generals (7-8) came back in the second half to make a run for it, but the Scarlet Knights didn't let up. Cassandra Fibbe had a team-high 10 points, while Victoria Tansey and Samantha Charette both finished with seven apiece.

Montrose 55, Waring 40: Ally Colarusso was Waring's (7-7) leading scorer with 26 points including three 3-pointers. Sophomore Eleanor Lustig had 12 rebounds and senior Allie Hinrichs dropped in 11 points.

Lynn Tech 37, North Shore Tech/Aggie 32: The Bulldogs fell as Lynn Tech's Hattie Watkins poured in 20 points. Olivia Mitchell led the NST/EA with eight points.

BOYS TRACK

Masco wins relay: The Chieftains took the Cape Ann League's 4x800 title in 8:48.51 at the league championship held at the Reggie Lewis Center. Masco was third in the team standings at 68 points with Casey Tines finishing second in the dash (6.82), Marco Caserta was second in the 2-mile at 10:03, and Alex Gikas second in the 600 (1:27.05). Masconomet was also second in the 4x400 relay.

Hamilton-Wenham's Ian MacLean was third in a fast-paced mile with a time of 4:35.88. Ian Thompson was fourth in the hurdles for the Generals, the 4x800 relay was fourth and the 4x200 relay was sixth. The Ipswich boys won the 4x200 relay.

GIRLS TRACK

Hamilton-Wenham second at CAL Meet: The Generals finished with 63.5 points just behind league champion North Andover's 67. Hamilton-Wenham was led by CAL championships runs in the 4x800 with Meg Blatchford, Emily Horgan, Emily Weigand, Emily Senning combining to run 10:08. Senning took home two gold medals with the league title in the 600 (1:38.58). Weigand was second in the mile at 5:14.99 while Masco's Mackenzie Shelgren was third in 5:20. H-W's Lily Shiland was third in the high jump at 5-feet.

Masconomet's Lily D'Agostino won the league 2-mile (11:41) title, edging out H-W's Blatchford (11:48.56). The Chieftains also had a strong showing the 300, where Lauren Drohosky won the title (42.87) and Kendal Pratt was third (43.76). Masconomet also won the girls 4x400 title.

Ipswich's junior Hannah Steele won the high jump at 5-2. Ipswich's Sarah Keiran was second in the 1000 in 3:03, a new school record, followed by H-W's Horgan (3:09) and Masco's Emily Wheeler (3:10). Ipswich was also second in the 4x200 in 1:51, while CAL MVP Sam Brown (7.61) was second in the dash followed by Masco's Kaleigh White (7.73) in third. The Tigers were also third in the 4x800.

In the team standings, Masconomet was third with 61 points and Ipswich was fourth with 52.

SWIMMING

Beverly 95, Salem 72: The Panthers won their final dual meet with double-winning seniors Connor Flynn (100 fly, 100 back) and Riley Leblanc (200 free, 100 breast) leading the way. Senior John Cohen won the diving.

FENCING

St. John's Prep 16, Concord Carlisle 11: The Eagles continue their undefeated senior at 16-0, with one more match this afternoon. David Batterman came up big for the Prep, going 2-0 in the foil. Dan Burke (2-1) had a strong bout with Concord Carlisle's ace.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Framingham St. 71, Salem St. 60: The Lady Vikings (9-13) lost their fourth straight and shot only 31 percent on the road. Breanna Comeau had a team-high 17 points along with 12 rebounds while Bridget Dullea scored 14 and Ginny Flemming added 13.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salem St. 91, Framingham 84: Tied at the intermission, the Vikings (14-7) scored 49 points in the second half, behind a strong outing from Brian Clark who finished with 29 points and nine rebounds. Salem State shot 51 percent from the field, while sophomore Andrew White poured in 26 points to go along with five boards.
