Monday's area roundup: Desmond fires no-hitter as Beverly Legion wins opener

After a two-year hiatus, the Beverly Legion baseball team made its return to the diamond a memorable one.

Shamus Desmond threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 with just three walks about his 92 pitches as Post 331 blanked Middleton, 5-0.

Ryan Anderson, Garrett Desmond, Sean Munzing, Matt Batsinelas, Charlie Lawler, Collin Murray and Sam Santosuosso were defensive standouts for Beverly.

Beverly, which scored three times in the first inning and added two more in the sixth, got a two-run single from Ciaran Moore. Other offensive leaders included David Drinkwater (double, walk, run scored, RBI); Anderson (2 singles, run scored) and Shamus Desmond (single, run scored).

agateHed:HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Boston Collegiate 8, Salem Academy 0: Brian Rodriguez threw a complete game and fanned seven, but Salem Academy made some costly errors while allowing six unearned runs in a MCFAO semifinal loss.

agateHed:NORTH SHORE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Beverly 4, Bistany 1: Alex Toomey drove in three runs and Dan Mello added an RBI as the Recs improved to 4-2-1. Lucas Ilges picked up his second victory of the summer last night for Beverly while Nick Colanto struck out four to earn the save.

agateHed:HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Foxboro Regional 3, Salem Academy 2: Foxboro grabbed the lead in the fifth and Salem Academy wasn’t able to plate a run in the sixth as they fell in the semifinals of the MCFAO tournament. Tara Deschenes went the distance for Salem Academy and struck out six batters while Sam Griffin provided two hits.
