Football Thursday: Games to Watch and Area Leaders for Week 2

The Salem News

---- — GAMES TO WATCH

Peabody (0-0) at Lynn English (0-0) tonight at Manning Field, 5: The Tanners have a new head coach, a new philosophy, a new offense, new defense and new attitude. Can all of these combine to turn the program around? The journey starts tonight against an always tough English club.

¢¢¢

Masconomet (0-0) at Melrose (0-0) tonight at Green Field, 7: The Chieftains begin what they hope will be a championship season tonight with a non-league road battle against the Red Raiders. Speed, skill and experience litter Masconomet’s roster, but unless they can produce victories on the gridiron it won’t mean much.

¢¢¢

Beverly (0-1) at Danvers (0-1) tomorrow at Deering Stadium, 7: You don’t want to start a shortened regular season 0-2 — and both of these teams certainly have something to prove after Week 1 setbacks. Can the host Falcons rebound from a home blowout with an upset victory tomorrow, or will the heavily favored Panthers right their ship instead?

¢¢¢

Bishop Fenwick (0-0) at Hamilton-Wenham (0-0) tomorrow at Hamilton-Wenham Regional field, 1: In what’s developed into a terrific local rivalry over the last five years, this one promises to be another doozy. Can the hosts stop a bigger (and likely faster) Fenwick team? Or can the Crusaders handle the myriad of options that H-W is likely to throw at them?

BY THE NUMBERS

387: The last time games were played on a Thursday night in observance of Yom Kippur — as there will be tonight — the seven contests involving Salem News-area teams combined to score that many points, a North Shore record for one day. The scores were:

Beverly 34, at Peabody 0

at Danvers 42, Lynnfield 35

at Masconomet 20, Gloucester 15

at Swampscott 24, Triton 23

Newburyport 28, at Marblehead 26

at Ipswich 37, Amesbury 34 (4 OT)

North Reading 43, at Bishop Fenwick 26
