Note: Each day before the high school football season begins the Salem News sports staff will discuss a different topic as we Countdown to Kickoff.
Which modern-day coach would you like to play for?
PHIL STACEY: Jim Pugh, Masconomet. Doesn’t need to yell and scream to get his point across or gain respect from players, coaches or officials. But underneath a usually calm veneer is an intense, passionate coach who will always go to bat for his team.
MATT JENKINS: Dan Bauer, Beverly. The Panthers’ head man and his coaching staff always seems to get the most out of each individual player.
MATT WILLIAMS: Steve Dembowski, Swampscott. The perfect blend of a guy who can make the right calls and also push the right buttons. Beyond the X’s and O’s, he “gets it” in terms of the emotion and inspiration of the high school game — the fiber that connects past, present and future in great programs.
GIANNA ADDARIO: Jim Rudloff, Marblehead. A coach who has no problem telling it like it is and who is a fantastic motivator.
JEAN DePLACIDO: Jim O’Leary, St. John’s Prep. Tough but fair and knows how to teach the game the right way.
DAN HARRISON: Jim Pugh, Masconomet. His teams have always had a dominant D-line; I would have loved to learn from him.
