Friday's area roundup: Gulls open with win

It took nearly 100 minutes, but the Endicott College men’s soccer team got the start it wanted in the season opener yesterday.

Zach Rizzo had a goal and an assist, including the game winning goal in overtime, as Endicott beat Purchase 2-1. Rizzo helped on Alex Jorge’s equalizer in the second half after the visitors had gone ahead, 1-0.


Rochester 2, Endicott 1: The Gulls (0-1) played well in the second half and drew close on a goal by Nicole Fournier in the 60th minute. Katie Donnelly made four saves for Endicott, which faces Union today in the Flower City tournament.

Gordon 9, Thomas College 0: The Fighing Scots opened the season with a big win in the Southern Maine Invitational.


Endicott 8, Colby-Sawyer 1: Endicott rolled by taking all six singles matches with wins by Chrissy Martel (6-2, 6-2), Amy Heacox (6-4, 6-1), Natalie Egbert (6-2, 6-2), MacKenzie Rhodes (6-1, 6-1), Suzie Newman (6-1, 6-1) and Brittany Potter (6-0, 6-0). Heacox and Rhodes won a doubles match and Potter teamed with Savannah Deady also did.


Babson 2, Endicott 1 (OT): MacKenzie Hurst scored with an assist from Kathryn Walker midway through the second half, but visiting Babson netted the winning goal in overtime to nip Endicott in the season opener for both clubs. Rose Bradley and Liz Solarik combined for 13 saves in the EC cage.
