DANVERS — Last May, St. John’s Prep running back Johnathan Thomas made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Maryland beginning in 2014.
But that hasn’t stopped the University of Wisconsin from heavily pursuing the Peabody resident.
Thomas is still committed to Maryland, but the official signing date isn’t until next February.
“Wisconsin is pounding him,” said Prep coach Jim O’Leary after Thomas ran for 263 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in a 36-22 win over Brockton. “They really want him, and of all the schools on his list (Wisconsin) is the only one he didn’t visit before committing. They want him to come out, and I don’t know if he plans to.
“The Maryland coach (Randy Edsall) came to our practice (Friday). He was in New England because the team played in Connecticut (Saturday).”
