BOYS BASKETBALL
With nine new members on the Pingree boys basketball team this year, offensive cohesion was a potential worry for head coach Steve Gibbs.
But even if the Highlanders struggle scoring, Gibbs' group can hang with opponents because of its defense.
After dispatching Landmark, 58-32, to move to 2-0 on the season, Gibbs' defense has now allowed under 30 points a game and is holding its opponents to under 25 percent from the floor.
"Both games are a tremendous credit to what we've done on the defensive end," noted Gibbs. "With nine new players it's important to get off to a quick start."
Seniors Kenny Adinkra and Daryn Wilson have led Pingree along with sophomore Connor Reardon, who has come off the bench to have a major impact.
Last night against Landmark, senior Isaac Carp led all scorers with 18 points while Kyle Lentini chipped in 17 points to go with his 12 boards. Sophomore Johnny Spears continues to shine, adding 16 points and 11 dimes.
Waring 55, Waldorf 23: Jack Stanton (12 points and 13 boards), Henry Balf (11 points and five dimes) and Alex Mitchell (eight points and nine rebounds) helped lift Waring to 2-0.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 41, Georgetown 34: Senior captain Lauren Moulton had a big third quarter to help Fenwick snap a tie and the Crusaders held on for a victory in Adam DeBaggis' first game at the helm. Moulton finished with 15 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Alicia Villet added nine points, Caroline Trainor contributed eight points and eight rebounds, and Kate Lipka contributed five blocked shots.
Beaver Country Day 55, Pingree 19: Junior captain Katlyn Oliver scored 11 points for the Highlanders, who dropped to 0-4.
