Area roundup: Bishop Fenwick stretches win streak to three

BOYS BASKETBALL

It’s been a pretty solid week for the Bishop Fenwick boys basketball team, which took another step towards the .500 mark and won their third straight with a 56-47 win over Austin Prep.

Matt Costello and Joe Buccheri led a balanced effort with 12 points each, with Costello chipping in four rebounds and Buccheri grabbing four steals. Dom Louni had nine points and eight rebounds for Fenwick, which led by three at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

“This is really the first time we’ve had the whole team after some injuried and we’re playing better defense and we’re scoring,” coach Mike Kane said. “The kids are having fun. We’re playing 10 guys deep, everybody’s buying in and everybody’s playing a role.”

BOYS TRACK

Gloucester 43 1/2, Marblehead 42 1/2: The Magicians (2-4) won the 4x400 relay but lost the meet by a single point. Winning individual events in a great meet were Derek Dumais (shot, 41-7), Conrad Rousseau (hurdles, 7.0), Connor Green (dash, 5.7) and Josh Beloff (300, 39.8).

Salem 47, Lynn English 39: Jon Crimble won the 300 (40.5) and was second in the high jump as the Witches grabbed their second meet win of the season. Ben Sattiewhite cleared 6-feet-2-inches to remain unbeaten in the high jump while Greg Speliotis (shot), Aaron Palmer (hurdles) and Jared Robinson (2-mile) also won events.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Notre Dame 51, Bishop Fenwick 40: The Crusaders (9-6) stumbled in a game that featured both teams using press defense and lots of turnovers. Kate Lipka drained four treys with a team-high 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while Chandler Wilder and Sydney Brennan each scored seven points.

Pingree 58, Concord 21: Senior forward Katlyn Oliver had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals as the Highlanders grabbed 32 rebounds and improved to 9-4. Senior guard Alex Kruck also played well with 11 points and a pair of assists and junior Haley Sabino scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

BOYS HOCKEY

Melrose 3, Peabody 2: The Tanners (2-8-2) were tied 2-2 after two on second period goals by Tyler Gillespie and Cam Smullen. Goalie Joe Powers made 27 saves but the hosts got the go-ahead goal five minutes into the third and Melrose’s goalie saved a breakaway bid by Mike Vadala in the last minute.

WRESTLING

Danvers/HW 44, Saugus 10: Jackson Leete (106), Chris Davis (113), Dan Papagelis (126), Chris Behen (138), Colin Marie (160) and Bobby Ingersoll (182) all won by pin for Danvers/H-W (9-7) in the team’s final home meet. Zach Pat (120) and Sam Anderson (152) also won their matches.

Beverly 48, Peabody 3: Junior John Cassola (170) and senior Brian Tripoli (195) scored impressive wins as Beverly improved to 14-7.

St. John’s Prep 73, Malden Catholic 0: The Eagles clinched their 15th straight Catholic Conference title while improving to 32-3 on the season. Wade Oman (132 lbs.) earned his first varsity win while other victories came from Hunter Costa (106), Lou Bornstein (113), Joe Flynn (120), D.J. Leimeux (126), Jared Costa (138), James Smith (145), Ben Kincaid (152), Peter Locke (160), Solomon White (170), Jim Messeder (182), Jon Polansky (195), Ian Butterbrodt (22) and Corey Jean-Jacques (285).

GIRLS TRACK

Marblehead 64, Gloucester 23: With the win, the Magicians clinched the NEC Small title for the third time in four years. Lily Cummings won the high jump, Olivia Vener took the hurdles, Mimi Goetz won the dash, Kathleen Huber took the 600, Paige Ferrucci was first in the 1000, Anna Barrell took the mile and Janaya Randall won the 2-mile.

Salem 55, Lynn English 30: Double-winner Deema Hijleh (high jump, 300) helped Salem grab its first victory of the season. Also winning events for the Witches were Abbey Meadowcraft (shot), Vanessa Le (dash), Emily Lonergan (600), Julia Mazina (1000) and Shannon Davis (2-mile).

North Shore Wins CAC: The Bulldogs took the Commonwealth Athletic Conference league meet with 148 total points to second place Greater Lawrence’s 148. Winning league event titles for North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie were senior Grace McNally (hurdles), freshman Rose Cirpsin (dash), freshman Alexa Marquis (600) and sophomore Kailee Silva (1000). Senior Taylor Deterding was third in the 2-mile and junior Alison Coleman was second in the shot.

SKIING

Masconomet splits: The Chieftains boys took care of Haverhill with junior captain Jay Kraunelis finished fourth overall in a race that featured several of the state’s top teams, including St. John’s Prep, with a time of 20.74. Sophomore Tyler Brown stayed consistent with an eighth place finish and Nolan Houston was 14th with Nate Houston in 16th.

Masco’s girls lost their meet though freshman Heather Gaskell had a very strong finish in seventh place. Junior captain Nichol Brown was in ninth and sophomore Emily Clay finished in 12th.

St. John’s Prep 125, North Andover 9: The Eagles took the top three places in the race with winner Cael Schwartz (20.59) followed by Wes Groom and Bobby Holmes. Ryan Carlucci wasn’t far behind in a solid fifth for the Prep.

FENCING

St. John’s Prep 17, Buckingham Brown & Nichols 10: St. John’s Prep (10-1) saw David Batterman go 3-0 in the foil, Dan Howlett go 3-0 in the epee and Paul Kleiner go 2-1 in the sabre.

SWIMMING

Bishop Fenwick 89, Cardinal Spellman 73: The Crusaders won their third straight and took first place in 10 of 11 events. Event winners were Linsey Andrews (200 free, 2:12.22), Pablo Jimenez (500 free, 6:28.68), Matthew O’Brien (50 free, 27.44) and double-winners Carson Christuk (200-IM and 100 fly) and Jimmy Gauthier (100 free and 100 breast). Fenwick also won the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salve Regina 71, Endicott 49: The Gulls (11-6) were plagued by 25 turnovers and shot just 39 percent from the floor in the road setback. Kesley Cuddy was her team’s leading scorer with nine points off the bench to go with nine rebounds while Jordan Ferland scored eight.

Western New England 68, Gordon 34: The Fighting Scots (2-15) had another tough outing at home with Lauren Kranyak leading the way with 12 points. Skylar Bareford and Brooke Kratche each had nine points for Gordon.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salve Regina 90, Endicott 79: Lance Greene and John Henault each scored 17 points but the Gulls (7-11) fell on the road. Lachlan Magee also hit double figures in scoring with 11 points.

Gordon 79, Western New england 71: David Dempsey erupted for 25 points as the Fighting Scots (12-5) won their fifth straight. Park Thomas added 12 points and Alex Carnes and Hans Miersma scored 11 each.
