BOYS HOCKEY
Swampscott head coach Gino Faia got exactly what he wanted in last night's 11-5 victory over host Revere. The Big Blue (8-7-3) have had trouble finding the back of the net lately, but captain Gino Cresta made sure that scoring wasn't a problem last night.
Swampscott stepped up with a six goal second period. Cresta had seven points, including three goals and four assists. His linemate, Matt Videtta also had a solid night with two goals and three assists.
"We expected it to be a hard fought close game," said Faia. "We were able to break out early and score on our opportunities, which has been a struggle for us to do."
Defenseman Trevor Massey finished the night with four points on a goal and three assists and goalie Patrick Sheehan turned away 33 shots.
Gloucester 5, Peabody 1: Nick Salalayko scored in the second, but it was sandwiched around three Fisherman goals and the Tanners fell. Joe Powers made 28 saves for Peabody, which now needs seven points in its last six games to extend its state tournament qualification streak.
Triton 5, Masconomet 3: Joe Griffin scored almost 10 minutes into the third period to cut Triton's lead to 4-3, but the Vikings answered only a minute later to put the Chieftains (6-9) away. Griffin finished with one goal and one assist, while Brian Hellrigel and Nick Aleckna also scored.
St. John's Prep 2, St. John's Shrewsbury 2: The Eagles (10-5-1) jumped on the board early with goals from Tyler Bird and Sam Kurker. Kurker assisted on Bird's goal but SJS got right back into it to tie it up at two a piece. David Letarte turned away 20 shots in the tie.
Dexter 5, Pingree 3: The Highlanders (8-13-2) took a commanding 3-1 lead into the third period, but couldn't hold off Dexter late in the game. Nate Soter, Jerome Cappadona and Zach Malatesta scored the goals for Pingree, while goalie Dan Prawdzik had 37 saves.
Marblehead 5, Lynn 3: Sophomore Erik Powers had two goals while Tom Koopman added a goal and an assist as the Headers (6-8-1) prevailed on the road. Trevor Jones and Ty Bates also scored and Mike Harper made 23 saves in net.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masconomet 9, Peabody 0: The Chieftains (7-6-4) scored three times in the last 3:58 of the first to pull away with Kendra Dow exploding for five points (two goals, three assists). Nancy Palermo had two goals and an assist, Katrina Buchta scored twice, Catherine Headrick had two assists and Jensena Moner had a goal and an assist for Masco, which needs two points in its last three games to get back to the state tourney. Netminder Alex Jones stopped 20 shots to earn her fourth shutout while Peabody's Joanna Ambeliotis made 35 saves.
Pingree 4, Winsor 3: Senior Lily Sabatini of Hamilton notched a goal and two assists as the Highlanders (10-7 overall) improved to 8-1 in league play. Captain Shelby DiFiore scored two goals, including the game-winner, Christina Caradonna had a goal, Katie Shreenan and Peabody's Mac Foster had one assist. Goalie Aly Heffron made 20 saves to earn her fourth win.
Medford 7, Marblehead 4: Freshman defenseman Eliza Quigley notched her third hat trick of the seaosn but it wasn't enough for the Lady Headers (7-7-2). Rachel McKay had a goal and an assist for Marblehead and Ally Healy earned three helpers.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 40, Matignon 29: Kate Lipka had 12 points and eight rebounds and Maura Doyle scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards as Fenwick drew a little closer to a tournament berth. The Crusaders (8-9) have five games remaining and need to win three.
Pingree 51, Portsmouth Abbey 32: Junior co-captain Katlyn Oliver scored 18 points to lead the Highlanders to their second win (2-14). Sophomores Haley Sabino (12 points) and Caroline Fay (9) also played well for Pingree.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Waring 59, BU Academy 43: Charlie Mitchell scored 16 points, Thomas Adam added 14 points, and Henry Balf had a solid all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to power Waring (8-5). Waring hosts Newman today (4:15) in a league contest that will determine the top seed for the conference tournament.
FENCING
St. John's Prep 15, Commonwealth 12: The Eagles finished the regular season a perfect 17-0 and now head to Sunday's state meet. The foil team led by Dave Batterman (3-0) and Rory Burke (2-1) performed well, as did epee's Devin Burke (2-1) and Dan Howlett (2-1) and sabre Dan Garey (2-1).
