The Salem News

Last Year’s Record: 19-6 (Division 2 North champions, fell in state semifinals)

Head coach: T.J. Baril (2nd season, 19-6)

Captains: Joe Klingensmith, Sr., 1B/P; Mike Manni, Sr., C; Tommy Budrewicz, Sr., OF.

Other key players: Will Twiss, Sr., 2B/P; Elias Varinos, IF; Greg Dougherty, Jr., OF; Dan Dempsey, Sr., IF; Ethan Dyer, Sr., P.

Strengths: Hitting and experience. Though Masconomet graduated CAL MVP Spiros Varinos, the Chieftains have plenty of talent and returning starters back. Joe Klingensmith is one of the top two-way players in the area, and Tommy Budrewicz and Greg Dougherty both enjoyed a monster state tournament at the dish during the Chieftains run to the D2 North crown last spring. With all that and more back, there are few easy outs in the Masco lineup.

Concerns: Pitching depth and consistency on defense. The Chieftains don’t have many dedicated throwers, as most of their hurlers also play positions in the field. That means there will be changes to Masco’s defense depending on who’s on the hill. While that’s not an obstacle per se, it’s one of the few concerns for a team that looks primed to challenge for the Cape Ann League crown.

Coach’s Outlook: “We’re looking to get better. All the guys agree that last year was great, but it won’t win any games for us now. Every team is 0-0, and they’re trying to beat us the same as we’re trying to beat them. We want to try to get better every single day, and we’ll use that approach every inning.”

Last year’s record:10-10 (Lost in Division 1 North preliminary round to Everett)

Head coach: Mike Gibeley (3rd season)

Captains: Maddie Kelly, Sr., 3B/SS; Julianna Kostas, Sr., OF; Alex Mendelsohn, Sr., C.

Key Returnees: Sarah Webster, Sr., OF; Emily Down, Sr., P; Margaret Maysek, Sr., IF; Casey Maidment, Jr., IF; Jordyn Murray, Jr., OF.

Strengths: Masconomet returns eight seniors, all of whom bring experience and excellent leadership to the field.

Concerns: Like many teams this spring, the Chieftains don’t want to be held up by bad weather. They’re looking to get the season going on time with few postponements.

Coach’s Outlook: “With eight returning seniors and a roster filled with superior students and great kids makes coaching this team an absolute pleasure.”

Last year’s record: 12-10 (lost to Needham, 20-4, in the East Division 1 first round)

Head coach: Tom Cobb (16th year)

Captains: Harry Cwik, Sr. M; Aidan Sears, Sr. D.

Key Returnees: Mike Jesi, Sr. D; Corey Tines, Jr. D; Steve Pease, Sr. M; Kevin Gilbert, Jr. M; Cam Jung, Jr. A; Max Craig, Sr. A; Harold Moody, Jr. A; Ben Hoesley, Sr. A.

Strengths: The Chieftains have a strong senior class and an excellent crew of returning players overall. Masco had a solid season a year ago, in what many believed would be a bridge year. The Chieftains won a tournament game in the preliminary round before getting knocked out by a powerful Needham team.

Concerns: Tighe Van Lenten was a rock between the pipes a year ago, and a senior leader, to boot. Replacing Van Lenten will be difficult, but Cobb expects first-year starter Johnathan Schiff to grow into the position.

Coach’s Outlook: “I’m very excited to get the season going and just waiting to get outside. We have a very tough schedule but expect to see lots of new things with a very dynamic offense with many threats and a returning defense that should create havoc against our opponents’ offensive units. It should be a great year with many great games to watch.”

Last year’s record: 17-6 (lost to Westford Academy, 19-9, in the North Division 1 semifinals)

Head coach: Alan McCarthy (7th year)

Captains: Kathleen Gillespie, Sr. M; Becky Stone, Sr. D; Sarah Yeakel, Sr. A

Key Returnees: Meg Collins, Jr. M; Abby Reblin, So. D

Strengths: This year’s Chieftains are talented on defense, have a solid group of returning starters, and McCarthy loves the team’s leadership. Gillespie, Stone, Yeakel, Collins and Reblin are the returning starters for Masco.

Concerns: Inexperience. Outside of the five returning starters, the Chieftains are on the young side.

Coach’s Outlook: “I’m looking forward to this season. It’s a young group, but we have some pretty skilled players. It’s exciting to watch players step up, whether it’s a reserve or a JV player from last year or a freshman that surprises you.”

Last year’s record: 14-4

Head coach: Andrew Turchon (third season)

Captains: Cam Netland, Sr., third singles; Jack Roscoe, Sr., doubles.

Returnees: Alex Fizz, Soph., first singles; Sam Gordon, Jr., doubles; Cooper McVay, Soph., doubles; Davis McVay, Jr., doubles.

Coach’s Outlook: “I’m looking forward to a successful season and warmer weather, of course. We have four starters returning from last season, including three strong singles players. Additionally, we have group of very competitive sophomores and juniors vying for a varsity position. All-in-all, we have talent, so I’m hopeful for the upcoming season.”

Last year’s record:10-8

Head coach:Paul Harrington (second season)

Captains: Danielle Dunn, Sr., first singles; Evelyn Harbert, Sr., second singles; Brooke Hunziker, Sr., doubles.

Returnees: Rebecca Costa, Jr., third singles; Samantha Moynihan, Sr., doubles; Maria Alexandrou, Jr., doubles; Erin Johnson, Sr., doubles; Eva Reineke Jr., third singles/doubles; Jackie Emmons, Jr., doubles; Lucie Farnham Soph., singles/doubles.

Coach’s Outlook: “We have a terrific group of athletes coming back from last season with experience. Our captains are leading the way with their work ethic and leadership. The team has bonded very well so far. I’m very lucky to have these young athletes to coach.”

Last year’s record: 8-0

Head coach: Steven Weitzler (2nd season)

Team captains: Paige Pratt, Sr., 400/4x400 Relay; Taylor Teed, Sr., 200/Long Jump/Triple Jump/4x100 Relay; Jenna Careri, Sr., Distance; Krista Moorman, Sr., 100 Hurdles; Sara Katz, Sr., 200/4x100 Relay; Cat Hosman, Sr., 400 Hurdles/Relays

Other key returnees: Jordan Feeney, Soph., 200/High Jump/Relays; Lauren Drohosky, Jr., 400/4x400 Relay; Kate Katsikos, Jr., 100/4x100 Relay; Liz Defossez, Sr., Pole Vault; Megan Lemaire, Jr., 400/Pole Vault; Abbey Greenslade, Jr., 400 Hurdles/4x400 Relay; Liz Dew, Soph., Shot Put/Discus; Dana Balek, Sr., Javelin

Coach’s outlook: “We will be competitive in every meet. We have a fairly young team and some unproven new members that will need to step up.”

Last year’s record: 7-1

Head coach: Dana Picillo (20th season)

Team captains: David Drigo, Sr., 200/Javelin/Shot Put/4x100 Relay; Harry Kent, Sr., Mile/Two Mile; Nolan Rice, Sr., High Jump/Long Jump

Other key returnees: Tristan Cluster, Sr., 400 Meter Hurdles/ 400/Triple Jump; Regan Charie, Jr., 100/200/4x100 Relay; Kevin Martin, Sr., Mile/High Jump; Dan Raphael, Jr., 800/4x400 Relay; Matt Mudgett, Sr., 100/200; Dan Cosgrove, Soph., Mile/Two Mile; Jackson Jennings, Jr., 200/400/4x400 Relay

Coach’s outlook: “I look forward to a competitive season in which we should be in the mix for the CAL championship.”
